5 benefits of vitamin C for your skin - A guide to skincare

This post is for those who want to take their skincare routine to the next level. Here we explain why it is wise to include Vitamin C in your skincare routine.

What is Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is an antioxidant naturally found in fruits and vegetables such as oranges, strawberries, broccoli, and kale.

Generally, Vitamin C serums have the best effect on the skin. Serums reach the deeper layers of the skin and are applied after your toner and before your face cream, facial oil, SPF, and makeup.

Use Vitamin C every day in your skincare routine for noticeable results and radiant, beautiful skin.

Usage

During the day, Vitamin C counteracts oxidative stress. In the evening, the skin barrier is strengthened, collagen production is stimulated, and damaged skin is repaired.

For best results, we recommend that you:

  • use Vitamin C both morning and evening.
  • use sunscreen in the morning. This is because Vitamin C has a slight exfoliating effect and needs protection from breaking down by UV rays for the best effect.
  • you should avoid combining Vitamin C with strong acids in your skincare routine. It can become too acidic (low pH) for the skin. It can also over-exfoliate the skin and lead to irritated and sensitive skin.
  • you can start including Vitamin C in your skincare routine when you are in your late teens.

Dosage

Remember that a higher concentration of Vitamin C does not always mean better results. The effect starts to level off at 20% Vitamin C, so there is no reason to go far beyond 20%.

Vitamin C comes in many different forms, varies in stability, and works best together with other antioxidants and substances.

For example, Vitamin C becomes more stable when combined with Vitamin E and ferulic acid, making it more effective.

Keep in mind that Vitamin C is very potent. If you have sensitive skin, you can start with a lower dose, for example 5%, and gradually increase as your skin gets used to it. This way, you avoid possible skin irritation.

5 benefits of Vitamin C in your skincare routine

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that is popular for use on the skin. It not only counteracts free radicals but also has other positive effects on the skin.

1. Prevents oxidative stress

Free radicals are naturally formed in our bodies when oxygen is metabolized. They are substances that easily react with other substances and can sometimes damage our cells. When high levels of free radicals are produced or when there are more free radicals than antioxidants, the body is exposed to oxidative stress.

When it comes to the skin, these factors can contribute to oxidative stress:

  • UV rays from the sun and screens
  • air pollution
  • smoking
  • nutrient-poor diet
  • alcohol

Oxidative stress can:

  • make the skin age faster
  • cause uneven skin tone and texture
  • cause fine lines and deep wrinkles (in later years)
  • contribute to a weaker skin barrier
  • make the skin dry and dehydrated
  • break down collagen so the skin becomes less elastic

Make sure to always use Vitamin C in your morning skincare routine. This neutralizes free radicals so the skin is protected throughout the day.

For daily protection against oxidative stress we recommend:

  • 100% Pure Vitamin C Serum

2. Fights hyperpigmentation and discolorations

A common misconception about Vitamin C in skincare is that it bleaches the skin to make it lighter.

What it does do is even out and brighten the skin tone. Vitamin C inhibits the skin’s overproduction of melanin. This lightens existing hyperpigmentation and discolorations.

Regular use of Vitamin C in your skincare routine can also prevent pigmentation and uneven skin tone from developing. This happens without affecting the skin’s normal pigmentation.

For uneven skin tone and pigmentation we recommend:

  • Brightening Serum
  • 100% Pure Vitamin C Mask
  • Multi-Vitamin Antioxidants Ultra Riché PM Treatment

3. Firms and rejuvenates skin

Because Vitamin C is strongly acidic, it encourages the skin to repair itself by increasing collagen and elastin production.

Thanks to its low pH, Vitamin C also has an exfoliating effect that removes dead skin cells. This smooths out fine lines, making the skin more firm and elastic. Always include Vitamin C in your skincare routine for younger, firmer, and plumper skin.

For aging or mature skin with fine lines we recommend:

  • Multi-Vitamin Antioxidants Potent PM Serum

4. Helps against acne

Vitamin C with its anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce acne breakouts.

Red, inflamed skin caused by inflammation can be soothed and calmed. Additionally, the formation of new acne scars can be reduced and existing scars can appear lighter.

For acne-prone skin we recommend:

  • 100% Pure Vitamin C Serum
  • 100% Pure Vitamin C Mask

5. Hydrating + glow

Vitamin C helps the skin retain moisture. More hydration and a more even skin tone give the skin a better glow.

For dull and tired skin we recommend:

  • Evolve Bio-Retinol C Booster
  • Multi-Vitamin Antioxidants PM Facial Oil
  • Multi-Vitamin Antioxidants Potent PM Serum
  • 100% Pure Multi-Vitamin Antioxidants Ultra Riché PM Treatment
