It's very easy to make your own warm hair treatment and it's very beneficial for the hair as well as pleasant. Well-known oils for hair are e.g. argan oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, almond oil, castor oil, sesame oil, rosehip oil and avocado oil. Less known are the African marula and moringa oils, the Japanese camellia oil, the orange carrot oil and the fantastic black cumin oil. All of them are perfect for giving the hair a beneficial treatment. You simply warm up your chosen oils on low heat. If you want to pamper your beloved hair with even more luxury, you can add herbs, hydrolates and/or essential oils.

Which herbs can I use?

  • To strengthen the hair, you can use chamomile, nettle or horsetail.

  • To cleanse the hair, e.g. with scalp problems, you can use: rosemary, parsley, sage or witch hazel.

  • To stimulate hair growth, you can use: peppermint, sage, chamomile or ginger.

  • Herbs that suit most people, even sensitive ones, are e.g. calendula, lavender and dried rose petals.

How do I do it?

  1. Add 3 tbsp of your chosen oil to a saucepan. You can choose one type of oil or make a blend with three or more different oils.

  • Example 1: 1 tbsp jojoba, 1 tbsp coconut and 1 tbsp castor oil.

  • Example 2: 1 tbsp argan, 1 tbsp almond and 1 tbsp avocado oil.

  • Example 3: 1 tbsp camellia, 1 tbsp argan, 1 tbsp jojoba oil.

  • Example 4: The oils above plus any of these:
1 tsp rosehip oil – said to reduce hair loss and moisturize.
1 tsp carrot oil – said to promote hair growth. Note: not for bleached hair!
1 tsp black cumin oil – said to reduce hair loss and moisturize.
1 tsp neem oil – good for combating dandruff/itching.

  1. Pour the oils into a saucepan and set on low heat and optionally add 1 tbsp of your chosen herbs or a hydrolate*. Let this infuse for about 30 minutes on very low heat and stir often.

*Hydrolates or herbal waters are a mild product that can be used for many different things. It is a byproduct from the production of essential oils.

  1. Then strain the oil into a small glass container using e.g. a coffee filter or a fine-mesh strainer.

  2. After that (optional) you can add essential oils such as 3-5 drops of rosemary, lavender, tea tree or peppermint. Essential oils have different qualities and can e.g. help soothe an itchy scalp. They also have very potent, fantastic scents.

  3. Apply the finished oil blend to the hair (should not be too warm) both on the scalp and all the way to the hair tips. Leave on for at least 30 minutes, take the opportunity to rest, meditate or just look out the window.

  4. Then wash the hair with a mild, natural shampoo and conditioner.

  5. You can store your oil for up to three months in a tightly sealed glass bottle or jar.
