It's super simple to make your own warm hair treatment, and it's very beneficial for your hair as well as pleasant. Well-known oils for hair include argan oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, almond oil, castor oil, sesame oil, rosehip oil, and avocado oil.Less known are the African marula and moringa oils, the Japanese camellia oil, the orange carrot oil and the fantastic black cumin oil.

All of them are perfect for giving your hair a beneficial treatment. You simply heat up oils of your choice on low heat. If you want to pamper your beloved hair with even more luxury, you can add herbs, hydrosols and/or essential oils.

Which herbs can I use?

  • To strengthen the hair you can use: chamomile, nettle or horsetail.

  • To cleanse the hair, e.g. for scalp problems, you can use: rosemary, parsley, sage or witch hazel.

  • To stimulate hair growth you can use: peppermint, sage, chamomile or ginger.

  • Herbs that suit most people, even those with sensitive skin, include calendula, lavender, and dried rose petals.

How do I do it?

  1. Add 3 tablespoons of oil of your choice to a saucepan. You can choose one type of oil or make a blend with three or more different oils.

  • Example 1:

1 tablespoon jojoba oil, 1 tablespoon coconut oil, and 1 tablespoon castor oil.

  • Example 2:

1 tablespoon argan oil, 1 tablespoon almond oil, and 1 tablespoon avocado oil.

  • Example 3:

1 tablespoon camellia oil, 1 tablespoon argan oil, 1 tablespoon jojoba oil.

  • Example 4:

The oils above plus one of these:
1 teaspoon rosehip oil – said to reduce hair loss and provide moisture.
1 teaspoon carrot oil – said to promote hair growth. Note: not for bleached hair!
1 teaspoon black cumin oil – said to reduce hair loss and provide moisture.
1 teaspoon neem oil – good for preventing dandruff/itching.

  1. Pour the oils into a saucepan, set it on low heat, and optionally add 1 tablespoon of your chosen herbs or a hydrosol*.Let this steep for about 30 minutes on very low heat and stir frequently.

*Hydrosols or herbal waters are mild products that can be used for many different purposes. They are byproducts from the production of essential oils.

  1. Then strain the oil into a small glass container using a coffee filter or a fine-mesh sieve.

  2. After that (optional) you can add essential oils such as 3-5 drops of rosemary, lavender, tea tree or peppermint.Essential oils have different qualities and can help soothe an itchy scalp. They also have very potent, wonderful fragrances.

  3. Apply the finished oil mixture to your hair (should not be too hot) both to the scalp and all the way to the ends of your hair. Leave it in for at least 30 minutes - take the opportunity to rest, meditate, or simply look out the window.

  4. Then wash your hair with a mild, natural shampoo and conditioner.

  5. You can store your oil for up to three months in a tightly sealed glass bottle or jar.
