Summer changes your gut flora more than you think

Sun, late nights, swimming, barbecues, and vacation habits affect the bacteria in your gut every day. The good news? Summer can actually be one of the best opportunities of the year to build a stronger microbiome.

For most people, summer often means a break from everyday routines. We sleep longer, eat later, eat irregularly, travel, swim, barbecue, and spend more time outdoors. For many, it feels like a pause from daily life – but for your microbiome, the trillions of microorganisms and bacteria living in your gut, it’s a period of constant change.

The interesting thing is that these changes don’t have to be negative. On the contrary! If you give your body the right conditions, summer can actually be one of the best times of the year to strengthen both your microbiome and your long-term health.

Further down in the article, you’ll also find a simple checklist on how to make your summer barbecue more beneficial for your gut flora – without having to give up what you enjoy.

Circadian rhythm The microbiome’s internal clock

We humans are governed by a biological circadian rhythm, and so are our gut bacteria. Research shows that the microbiome follows its own daily pattern where different bacteria become more or less active depending on when we eat, sleep, and move.

When meals are pushed back several hours, evenings get late, and sleep becomes irregular, that rhythm can be disrupted. Studies show that even short-term disturbances in the circadian rhythm affect the bacterial composition and the substances bacteria produce.

That doesn’t mean you have to follow a strict schedule during vacation. But the body still appreciates some regularity. Eating at roughly the same times most days and prioritizing good sleep gives both the body and microbiome better conditions. A small habit worth keeping.  

Sleep Recovery also for the gut

Vacation often means more recovery, which is good news for the gut.

During sleep, important repair processes occur in the gut barrier while the immune system is regulated. Good sleep has also been linked to greater bacterial diversity, which is often seen as a hallmark of a resilient microbiome.

Many also find that their digestion improves when stress decreases and sleep gets better – an effect likely due to the interaction between the brain, nervous system, and gut.

Barbecues don't have to be a problem

Summer food is often associated with grilled food, potato salad, and sweet desserts. However, a single meal matters little. It is the overall diet that shapes the microbiome.

The barbecue evening becomes much gentler on the gut flora if the plate also contains plenty of vegetables, legumes, herbs, and fiber-rich sides. The fibers serve as nourishment for the bacteria, which in turn produce short-chain fatty acids, including butyrate. These substances help strengthen the gut barrier and have anti-inflammatory properties.

So you don’t have to choose between enjoying summer and taking care of your gut flora. Often, it’s enough to complement rather than exclude (keep reading for meal tips!).

Alcohol affects more than many think

For many, a glass of wine or a cold beer is part of the holiday. In moderate amounts, it doesn’t have to be a problem, but high alcohol consumption can affect the microbiome in several ways.

Alcohol can reduce bacterial diversity, increase permeability in the gut barrier, and contribute to low-grade inflammation. It also negatively affects sleep, which indirectly also impacts the microbiome.

A simple way to reduce the burden is to alternate alcohol with water and ensure that your diet simultaneously contains plenty of fiber and polyphenols from, for example, berries, vegetables, and herbs.

Nature can enrich your microbiome

One of the perhaps most underrated health benefits of summer is all the time we spend outdoors.

We are then exposed to a significantly greater biological diversity than during the winter months. Soil, plants, forests, and natural environments contain many microorganisms that we come into contact with through the skin, air, and our hands.

Research shows that people who spend a lot of time in nature often have a more diverse microbiome and a better-regulated immune system. Exposure to natural microorganisms is believed to be an important part of the explanation.

This does not mean we should start eating soil – but gardening, walking barefoot, hiking in the forest, or working in the garden can be much healthier than many think.

Swimming and marine life

Swimming in the sea, lakes, and natural waters also involves contact with a large number of microorganisms. This exposure differs significantly from the sterile indoor environment where many of us spend most of the year.

The research field is still young, but much suggests that regular contact with natural environments contributes to richer microbial exposure, which in turn can benefit the immune system.

Less stress your perhaps greatest gain for the gut

The gut and brain constantly communicate with each other through the so-called gut-brain axis.

When stress levels are high, among other things, the gut's movements, blood flow, and permeability change. At the same time, the composition of bacteria is affected.

For many, vacation means fewer meetings, less time pressure, and more recovery. The reduced stress can therefore be one of the most important reasons why the stomach works better during time off.

Travel both opportunities and challenges

Travel often means new dishes, new bacteria, and different water than the body is used to.

For most people, this is completely harmless and can even contribute to a greater variety of microorganisms. At the same time, the risk of traveler's diarrhea increases in certain parts of the world.

Good hand hygiene and safe food are still the best preventive strategies.

When antibiotics become necessary

Sometimes antibiotics are necessary, for example in the case of a bacterial infection during travel. Antibiotics save lives and should be used when truly needed.

At the same time, we know that the treatment also affects many of the bacteria that normally live in the gut. For some, the microbiome recovers quickly, while for others it can take months before the bacterial composition stabilizes.

After a course of antibiotics, it can therefore be wise to focus a little extra on the quality of your diet. A varied diet rich in fibers, legumes, vegetables, fruit, berries, and other plant-based foods gives the remaining bacteria good conditions to recover. For some, a supplement of lactic acid bacteria with targeted probiotic strains can also be a valuable complement.

Summer shapes your eating habits

One of the most exciting discoveries in microbiome research is how quickly bacteria respond to what we eat. Changes can sometimes be seen within just a few days.

This also means that summer offers a unique opportunity to create new habits.

Fresh berries, tomatoes, herbs, legumes, fruit, root vegetables, and other seasonal ingredients contain fibers and polyphenols that serve as nourishment for many of our most beneficial bacteria.

The greater the variety of plant-based foods we eat, the more different bacteria get the chance to thrive.

Summer can be a fresh start for your microbiome

It's easy to think that health is about perfect routines all year round. But the microbiome doesn't work that way. It is influenced by the overall picture over time.

Summer certainly means late nights, travel, and changed routines. But it also means more daylight, more movement, less stress, more time in nature, and an abundance of fresh ingredients.

This makes summer an excellent opportunity to give both the body and the gut flora better conditions.

Maybe a stronger microbiome isn't about living more controlled, without having to live a little closer to nature.

This is how you ensure the barbecue meal becomes a highlight for your gut flora

It's rarely about excluding individual foods. Much more important is what you choose to add. With a few simple additions, a classic barbecue dinner can become much more beneficial for both the microbiome and your long-term health.

  • Start with a large green salad.
    Fill it with many different vegetables and top with pomegranate seeds as well as a mix of seeds, such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and sesame seeds. Variation in plant-based foods gives different bacteria a chance to thrive, while pomegranate contributes polyphenols that gut bacteria convert into bioactive compounds.
  • Serve grilled asparagus.
    Asparagus naturally contains inulin, a prebiotic fiber that serves as nourishment for several of our beneficial gut bacteria, including bifidobacteria.
  • Choose cold potato salad.
    When boiled potatoes cool down, resistant starch forms, which serves as food for bacteria further down in the colon. Feel free to mix the potatoes with olive oil, fresh herbs, onion, garlic, parsley, dill, and other spices. They not only add flavor but also polyphenols and other plant compounds that the microbiome appreciates.
  • Drizzle with extra virgin organic olive oil.
    Extra virgin organic olive oil is rich in polyphenols and works just as well over salad as over grilled vegetables.
  •  Finish with blueberry pie.
    Yes, indeed. A blueberry pie made with plenty of blueberries and oats can be an excellent finish to the barbecue dinner. Blueberries contain large amounts of polyphenols, while oats contribute beta-glucans and fermentable fibers a combination that many of our gut bacteria thrive on.

The best barbecue dinner for the gut flora is therefore not about being perfect. It's about letting the meal include a greater variety of plant-based foods. When you do that, you not only feed yourself, you also nourish the trillions of microorganisms that work for your health every day.
