During prehistoric times, there was an inland sea covering what is now Redmond in Utah, USA, known as the Sundance Sea.
That sea is gone, but its remains are a large, undisturbed, underground salt deposit, and even though the salt is deep in the earth, it is actually sea salt. Redmond's mines are room and pillar mines, as opposed to open-pit mines, which reduces the impact of mining on the earth's surface.
