How to Sprout?
1. Soaking:
"Mucilaginous" seeds - such as arugula, chia, cress, and mustard only need to be soaked for about 5-15 minutes. Arugula seeds are mucilage-forming and must be grown in a thin layer, preferably on a sprouting tray.
2. Rinsing:
Make sure to spread the seeds evenly on the tray so they don't stick together in layers. Water them once a day until the first baby shoots appear, then increase to 2-3 times a day. Use only the amount of water needed to keep them moist, not too much.
They should not be in constant contact with water; instead, after soaking, they should make do with the liquid in the gel that forms during soaking. Additional water can be sprayed using a spray bottle once a sprout has developed.
3. Placement of the sprouting tray:
Protect the seeds from sunlight until the first leaves appear. The shoots are ready after approximately 5 days.
4. What to look for:
After a couple of days, you will see small shoots forming - this is the beginning of sprouting. You may notice small white fibers on the shoots. This is completely normal but can easily be mistaken for mold at first glance. Mold has a musty smell and looks like gray fur, not the same thing.
5. Harvesting:
The sprouts are ready to harvest after approximately 6-8 days. After one round of sprouting, wash everything and let it air dry. We recommend rinsing the sprouts before eating them.
Storage: If the sprouts are not to be eaten immediately, they can be stored in the refrigerator for 2-3 days and should be rinsed before each use.
Seed storage: Store in a dry, cool, and dark place.
How to use sprouts: Sprinkle over salads, add to soups, wraps, sandwiches, or any type of food.
