When do I need dietary supplements and are natural or synthetic multivitamins better?

The best nutrition comes directly from vegetables, sprouts, fruits, berries, and other natural foods. However, we may also need a multivitamin-mineral as a foundation and other dietary supplements during certain periods.

Even if we believe we eat a balanced diet, we often don't consume sufficient levels of important vitamins and minerals. Below we list seven reasons why we might need supplements.

7 reasons why you might need supplements

  • The reference levels for daily intake of vitamins and minerals currently established in Sweden are low. They are set to prevent deficiency diseases but not for us to function optimally.

  • The soil is not as rich in nutrients as it once was. Both minerals and vitamins have decreased in the soil as well as nutrients in fruits and vegetables.

  • We often need extra nutrition during periods of illness. People with gastrointestinal problems often need additional support.

  • For chronic intestinal problems, when taking medications or birth control pills, and if you are a smoker, additional nutritional supplements are needed as nutrient deficiencies occur.

  • We may also need supplements if we:
    – exercise.
    – are older.
    – have osteoporosis.
    – are in perimenopause.
    – are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Vegetarians and vegans may need dietary supplements.

  • We are exposed to more toxins than ever before. We need to counteract damage from chemicals, car exhaust, and free radicals.

Preferably use a natural multivitamin

The supplements we take should be a concentrated source of natural nutrition that the body can recognize and use in the best way. A good, natural supplement uses the matrices of nutrients found in natural food, which our bodies have evolved to utilize. We sell several supplements that use this principle. Here follows a brief presentation of some of our favorites:

Vitamin Code Woman/Man

Based on research about how different nutrients are best absorbed in the body and cultivated through a special technique where a yeast fungus is fed with selected nutrient extracts to produce an easily absorbable matrix of specific nutrients.

BioSuperFood

A blend of only 3 different types of algae, grown under controlled conditions in glass tubes filled with pure spring water. These three algae together contain an incredible range of natural nutrition and can in many cases function as a multivitamin/mineral that is also very rich in antioxidants.

E3Renew Me!

A blend of the incredibly nutritious AFA-algae, combined with herbs and minerals that complement it nutritionally: Camu Camu for vitamin C, MSM for sulfur, spirulina, trace minerals, and vitamin E from rice bran. Which multivitamin you choose is entirely individual, and your body's response to them can also change over time. The best approach is to try one you feel drawn to; learn to listen to your body and its signals about what it needs. Often this is simpler than we think – after all, it's an ability that all humans have instinctively.
