About the filter

When the Berkey Sport bottle is squeezed, water is pushed through the filter. The density and quality of the water determine the adsorption rate. The exposure time through the filter has been carefully calculated to provide the most significant volume separation of toxic chemicals and contaminants caused by industry and agriculture.

"Tortuous Path" structure

Sport Berkey’s filter element has a "Tortuous Path" structure that gives it its unique properties. The exclusive filter element consists of Berkey’s proprietary "adsorptive" media that promotes ionic "uptake" of contaminants such as cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, aluminum, mercury, and other hazardous heavy metals.

The superior technology used in the Sport Berkey portable water filter has been developed, refined, and improved through laboratory tests and field studies. Berkey’s team of water filter experts, field engineers, and research specialists have developed this purification process through countless hours of testing and research. The media in the water filtration element removes contaminants through the surface phenomenon called "adsorption," which is the result of molecular attraction of molecules to the surface of the media.

Note that the bottle does not filter out fluoride. Fluoride is very difficult to remove from water. Removing fluoride from the water supply requires a large amount of filter media to remove a small amount of fluoride. Currently, most of the space in the sport bottle would be needed for a filter to effectively remove fluoride.

Refill capacity

Municipal water supply provides about 640 refills, which corresponds to about 1378 liters of water. Water from questionable sources provides about 160 refills, which corresponds to about 94 liters of water.

Berkey water filter systems

Berkey water filter systems come in several different models. Each Berkey model has been designed with a specific set of features in mind. The most important factor to consider when deciding which size is best is how many people will be using the Berkey filter and how many liters of water need to be supplied.

Also consider how the filter will be used: will the purified water be used solely for drinking water, or will the system also be needed for hygiene and cooking? Is a lightweight plastic version needed, or a stainless steel model? Finally, will the system be used daily or only in emergencies?

All models produce water of the same high quality. The difference between the models is the amount of water they can produce per hour and the size of the storage container. The most popular model is the Big Berkey in stainless steel, which is excellent for an average household. Larger Berkeys also accommodate more filter elements, allowing the system to produce water faster due to the higher flow rate.

The Sport Berkey Water Bottle is made from safe, non-bleaching, BPA/BPS-free low-density polyethylene (LDPE recycling code #4). The lid is made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE recycling code #2). The straw is made from polypropylene (recycling code #5).

The number on the bottom of the bottle should not be confused with the recycling code. The bottom of the bottle will be marked with the molded number (mold number), which ranges from 1 to 4. LDPE is used for the bottle because of its "cling properties." LDPE is a highly effective moisture barrier and is often used for bread bags, trash/leaf bags, mustard and honey bottles, etc.

If the bottle is not used for an extended period, it is important to remove the filter. Once the filter is removed, rinse the bottle with a 50/50 mixture of 3% hydrogen peroxide and water. Then rinse with water. Allow all parts to air dry before reassembling. Seal the bottle in an airtight container if possible.
