Castile soap is one product for everything!
If you are going on vacation with camping, tent, bike, caravan, or cabin, this is the perfect multi-product.
What does Castile mean?
The word Castile is a reference to La Castilla – a region in central Spain that is historically significant in the history of soap making.
In America, Castile means a soap made with olive oil, usually a liquid soap of olive oil and coconut oil.
What is Castile soap made of?
Dr Bronner’s mild liquid Castile soaps are based on organic coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, and hemp oil.
Vermont Soap’s mild liquid Castile soaps are based on organic saponified coconut oil, jojoba oil, and olive oil.
To make a good soap, only a few natural ingredients are needed, no complex chemical mixtures.
Problems in mass-produced soap making can be low-quality base ingredients, alcohol, synthetic colors and fragrances, and preservatives. The soap then lacks moisture fundamentally and tends to have alkali residues left, which will irritate the skin.
Oil and alkali must be balanced to make the perfect soap, as we mentioned earlier.
Problems arise when alkali and oil do not chemically combine; alkali salts remain in the product. Excess alkali creates a soap that is too strong and dries out the skin.
So why doesn’t everyone make natural Castile soap? It’s about money. Mass production costs less, takes less time, and yields greater profit.
Good, organic, and sustainable ingredients for a less drying soap cost more.

Castile soap for cleaning & dishwashing
Here are some general recommendations for diluting the soap for cleaning:
- For floors, walls, and car washing: Add about 0.5 – 1 dl liquid soap to a bucket of warm water. Clean as usual and let dry.
- Laundry: Use about 0.5-0.8 dl per load – a bit more for hard water. Liquid soap can be neutralized by detergent residues in the machine, so use enough – you may need to use a little extra the first time. Perfect for hand washing most silk fabrics, delicate fabrics, and wool.
- For stain removal: Wet the surface and apply soap. Work the soap into the material from several directions and let it sit for a while. Wet the stain with a cloth or towel and rinse.
- General cleaning: Fill a clean spray bottle with warm water, add 5% concentrate, spray and wipe. Suitable for all water-safe surfaces. Safe and non-toxic for people, plants, and pets.
- Bathroom cleaning: Use the soap on a sponge on tiles or porcelain, rinse.
- The soap can also be used to clean makeup brushes.
