Pollen season and the immune system – how you can naturally support your body

Spring is wonderful in many ways. The light returns, the days get longer, and nature awakens again.

But for many, this time also means something else.

The eyes start to itch a little.
The nose feels irritated.
And the energy isn’t quite where it usually is.

Maybe you first notice it one morning when you wake up. Or when you’re out for a walk and suddenly feel your eyes start to water a bit more than usual.

The strange thing is that it can sometimes start long before you actually see pollen in the air.

It’s easy to think that pollen allergy is only about the nose and airways. But in the body, it’s actually the immune system that reacts.

When the body encounters pollen, the immune system interprets it as a threat. Immune cells activate and start releasing signaling substances, including histamine. That’s what causes the eyes to itch and the nose to run.

But how strong the reaction is also depends on the overall condition of the immune system. That’s also why some years feel much worse than others.

At its core, pollen reactions often involve the immune system reacting more strongly than it really needs to. That’s why many start looking for more natural ways to support the body during pollen season.

Why pollen season can feel different from year to year

The immune system is constantly working in the background to balance between reacting to threats and avoiding overreactions.

When the system works as it should, the body can distinguish between real threats, like bacteria or viruses, and things that are actually harmless, like pollen.

In people with allergies, the immune system still interprets pollen as a threat and triggers a reaction.

How strong the reaction is depends on several factors, such as how burdened the immune system already is, the state of gut health, and how the body’s inflammation balance functions.

That’s why many experience that pollen season can feel completely different from one year to another.

The gut plays a bigger role than many think

A large part of the immune system actually resides in the gut.

Here live trillions of bacteria that together form what is called the gut flora or microbiome. These bacteria are in constant dialogue with the immune system and help the body determine what is a threat and what is not.

When the gut flora is balanced, the immune system can often regulate its reactions more effectively. But if the balance is disturbed, the immune system can sometimes become more reactive.

This is one reason why gut health is often discussed in connection with allergies.

Fibers, fermented foods, and a varied diet can help the good bacteria thrive. But many also choose to support the gut flora with lactic acid bacteria during periods when the immune system is under more strain.

Supplements many use during pollen season

As pollen season approaches, many choose to give their body some extra support.

One substance often mentioned in this context is quercetin, a plant flavonoid naturally found in, for example, apples, onions, and berries. It has long been of interest in research because it acts on the body’s inflammation system and can influence how histamine is released.

Many also think of vitamin C during this time of year. Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system and also acts as an antioxidant when the body is under more stress. Some prefer a pH-neutral form because it tends to be gentler on the stomach.

Since a large part of the immune system actually resides in the gut, many also choose to support the gut flora. When the bacteria in the gut are healthy, the immune system has better conditions to do its job. That’s why some use lactic acid bacteria as a way to help balance the gut environment.

Also, zinc is a nutrient often highlighted in connection with the immune system. The mineral is involved in many of the body’s immune processes and contributes to the normal function of the immune system.

For some, even omega 3 fatty acids can be a valuable complement. They are part of the body’s inflammation system and can influence how the immune system regulates its reactions over time.

It’s rarely a single supplement that makes all the difference. But sometimes the right support can help the body react a bit more balanced when pollen season starts.

Here at Glimja, we notice that many only start thinking about this once symptoms have already appeared. That’s why some choose to start supporting the body a little earlier in the spring.

Small things can make a big difference

Pollen season can’t always be avoided.

But how the body reacts can often be influenced more than you might think.

For some, it’s about starting to think about gut health and diet earlier in the year. For others, it’s about giving the immune system a little extra support as spring approaches.

When the body gets the right conditions, many find that pollen season simply becomes a bit easier to get through, with less irritation, more energy, and a body that reacts a bit more calmly.

Do you recognize these symptoms when pollen season begins?

If so, it might be worth considering what small things can help the body handle pollen a little better during spring.
