Repair faded and damaged hair with 10 effective methods
When hair is bleached, its protein structure is destroyed as the pigment is removed. The hair is therefore always damaged to some extent after bleaching. The hair’s cuticle opens, making it feel drier and more fragile than usual. Here’s how you can quickly repair damaged hair after bleaching 1. Give the hair a repairing treatment If the hair is in poor condition after bleaching, an intensive treatment with Bruns Hair Mask can make a big difference immediately. Save the hair by letting it work on clean hair overnight or for a whole day. Then rinse out. No conditioner is needed afterward because this hair treatment closes the hair’s cuticle. 2. Reintroduce moisture Think about how dry your hair usually gets after a long sunny vacation. Bleaching the hair has the same effect. That’s why it’s important to add extra moisture as a complement to the more nourishing treatments. Moisture causes the hair’s cuticle to close, which prevents split ends and reduces damage. Bruns Conditioner Spray is great to use as extra moisture and care during the day. Spray directly on dry, frizzy hair. 3. Strengthen the hair with proteins If the hair is damaged after bleaching and so fragile that it breaks easily, proteins are a must. DIY hair treatment with spirulina Try a simple DIY hair treatment with protein-rich spirulina. Do this: Blend 1-2 teaspoons of spirulina with an avocado into a smooth paste. It’s fine to replace the avocado with banana and 1 teaspoon of coconut oil or another cold-pressed oil. Place a towel on your shoulders to protect your clothes. Apply the mixture to clean hair and scalp. Put on a cap and let it work for at least 30 minutes, preferably a couple of hours. Then rinse thoroughly with water and wash out the hair with a mild, natural shampoo or light conditioner. Besides protein, spirulina is rich in healthy fatty acids and iron, which preserve the hair’s normal moisture levels and help hair grow faster. You can also boost your regular hair mask or conditioner with spirulina. Remember to choose high-quality spirulina for the best effect. 4. Switch to a repairing shampoo and conditioner Bruns has developed Shampoo no. 24 and Conditioner no. 24 especially for bleached or blonde hair. They add shine, thicker hair, and also reduce yellow tones in the hair. 100% Pure Glossy Locks Repair Shampoo and Conditioner provide your hair with plenty of moisture, antioxidants, and also biotin that strengthens the hair. 5. Stop heat-treating your hair Heat will dry out and damage your hair even more. Save your hair that is already extremely damaged by putting away the hairdryer and various styling irons. Here’s how you can strengthen your hair from within For long-term results, an investment in your own body and health is required. Drink enough water every day and eat a balanced diet. Keep sugar and fast food to a minimum. Instead, eat plenty of vegetables. It is especially important to review your diet if you have poor hair quality or are losing hair due to nutritional deficiencies. 6. Boost your hair with superfood Nettle is the super herb to add to your diet if you want to strengthen your hair from within. Nettles contain many vitamins and minerals that are good for the hair: Silica for strong and healthy hair. Vitamins such as vitamin A, which helps the body maintain normal hair, B vitamins, vitamin D, and vitamin E, which are needed for healthy hair follicles and normal hair growth. Minerals like zinc and selenium that contribute to a healthy scalp and healthy hair. Other minerals like iron, phosphorus, potassium, manganese, and magnesium. If you don’t have access to wild nettles, you can buy nettles in the form of liquid extract, powder, or herbal tea. This way, you can easily get this superfood by enriching your water, smoothie, or enjoying a cup of herbal tea. Nettle is an amazing superfood with many health benefits. 7. Vitamins that are good for the hair It’s not just one vitamin that’s needed but a combination of many different vitamins and minerals to maintain normal hair, its natural pigmentation, and shine. Many ask for better options as well as vegetarian and vegan alternatives to Hair Control Original. Here we want to recommend both Holistic and Helhetshälsa. They have developed supplements specifically to strengthen skin, hair, and nails. Compared to Hair Control, these have fewer fillers, higher dosages, and other vitamins and minerals that are good for the hair. Helhetshälsa Hair, Skin & Nails is a vegan-friendly supplement. In addition to all the beneficial vitamins, it also contains MSM, hyaluronic acid, and silica that support the hair’s structure. Holistic Hair, Skin, Nails is a high-dose vegetarian supplement. It contains a broad spectrum of important vitamins and minerals such as hyaluronic acid, extra iodine, zinc, L-cystine, biotin, keratin, and selenium that contribute to the hair’s normal pigmentation and health. Here’s how you can protect your hair before the next bleaching 8. Talk to your hairdresser Ask your hairdresser for a milder bleach with a shorter processing time. If you bleach your hair at home, do not apply bleach to the scalp. Take care of the hair follicles so they don’t get burned. Remember that healthy hair follicles are important for healthy and beautiful hair. 9. Preventive measures before bleaching your hair Before the next bleaching, you can feed your hair plenty of moisture and nutrients. Not just the day before or the same day, but preferably 1-4 weeks before bleaching. Use hair masks, moisturizing sprays, and keep your hair away from blow-drying and heat styling. 10. Protect your hair with hair oil On the same day you bleach your hair, you can pre-treat it with hair oil. The hair oil will protect the hair during bleaching, reducing damage and resulting in a gentler bleaching effect. The easiest way is to apply the oil to damp hair and not wash it out. It should remain in the hair during the treatment as you apply the bleaching product on top of the oil. It is recommended to use pure cold-pressed argan oil or coconut oil. Whether you have just started to get fine lines or already have several wrinkles on your face, it is never too late to start a pro-aging or anti-aging skincare routine. 7 common signs of aging skin: Fine lines or wrinkles, especially appearing around the eyes and mouth. Drier, thinner (more transparent), and also more sensitive skin. The skin is more easily damaged and takes longer to heal. Rougher texture where pores become more visible. Uneven skin tone, including discolorations. Age spots, pigmentation spots. Sagging and loose skin. Do you recognize yourself? Then you should keep reading to get a complete guide on how to counteract signs of aging and meet the skin’s new needs. Why do wrinkles and other signs of aging appear? The skin on the face is extra thin, sensitive, and exposed. 6 factors that accelerate skin aging: Diet. Lifestyle. Screen and sun exposure. Air pollution, toxins, and chemicals. Genetic inheritance. Hormonal changes. The hormone estrogen has a big impact on women’s skin. When levels drop drastically around middle age, women develop premature signs of aging. The aging process affects the skin in several ways: Skin cells age with the individual. The epidermis becomes thinner and the renewal process of skin cells slows down drastically. The skin’s structure and functions deteriorate. Sebum (oil) production decreases significantly, making the skin drier and causing more wrinkles over the years. Melanin (pigment that controls your skin color) producing cells decrease, resulting in uneven skin tone. The number of fibroblasts (cells in the dermis) decreases. These produce moisture-binding hyaluronic acid needed for the skin to be plump. Fibroblast cells also produce collagen. Collagen maintains the skin’s structure and is important for skin elasticity and firmness. The decreased levels of hyaluronic acid and collagen make the skin saggy and wrinkled. Can you get rid of wrinkles? To remove wrinkles permanently, you would need to turn back the clock or go back in time to take better care of the skin. The answer is therefore no. However, you can definitely partially or completely smooth out fine lines and wrinkles on the face. Smoothing means adding something externally or internally that can plump the skin and stimulate a stronger structure. This way, the skin can look younger. It also means the effect disappears as soon as you stop supporting the skin. Products that help against wrinkles and why they work An anti-age skincare routine is interconnected, meaning the products need each other to work together to counteract signs of aging. For best results, you should have a complete skincare routine for aging skin. Below we mention the most important tools against wrinkles. Sun Protection and SPF If for some reason you only want to invest in one product, then sun protection is the way to go. UV rays not only break down hyaluronic acid and collagen in the skin. They also damage and alter cells' DNA, causing the skin to age earlier and faster. Protecting yourself daily and year-round from the sun is therefore a must if you want to maintain a youthful appearance. Sunscreen is the most effective way to slow down skin aging. It is never too early to start protecting the skin. Use SPF 20 in winter and SPF 30 in summer. SPF also protects the hyaluronic acid and vitamin C in your skincare products. In addition, SPF is a must if you exfoliate the skin. These SPF products are well suited for mature skin; two are tinted and one is neutral. i+m Naturkosmetik Sun Protect Tinted Sun Care Face Cream Alga Maris Tinted Sunscreen SPF 30 and 50 Evolve Climate Defence Facial Cream Antioxidants and vitamin C When the skin is exposed to stress factors such as poor diet, air pollution, and sun, free radicals are formed. It is the free radicals that cause oxidative stress and make the skin age faster. Antioxidants are what can neutralize free radicals. The most popular antioxidant in skincare is vitamin C. Free radicals react and take electrons from vitamin C instead of from the components of cells and DNA. In this way, the skin is protected from damage and premature aging. Because vitamin C is acidic, it stimulates the skin's repair process with its low pH, which increases the production of collagen and elastin. These are important building blocks that support the skin's structure, making the skin fuller, firmer, and more elastic. Vitamin C also has an exfoliating effect that helps dead skin cells release from the skin. With the help of vitamin C, the skin becomes better at retaining moisture. The moisture in the skin smooths fine lines and gives radiance. Remember to use SPF to protect the vitamin C from breaking down due to sunlight. Vitamin C is an important part of an anti-aging skincare routine and is best used both morning and evening. For the morning, we recommend: Vitamin C serum mixed with other antioxidants. i+m Naturkosmetik Mix & Match Vitamin C Nectar – vitamin C serum with argan oil and hyaluronic acid. For the evening, we recommend: Serum with vitamin C, antioxidants, niacinamide, and retinol. Facial oil with, among other things, vitamin C, retinol, antioxidants, and vitamin D. Cleansing: Evolve Enzyme + Vitamin C Cleanser Powder – a fine cleansing powder with vitamin C that becomes a gentle cleansing soap when it comes into contact with water. Exfoliate the skin Older skin cells do not renew as quickly and often as younger skin. Dead skin cells also tend to remain longer on the skin's surface, leading to uneven texture, dryness, and a dull appearance. By exfoliating regularly, you can get rid of dead skin cells. If you choose exfoliation or peeling with AHA acids (alpha hydroxy acids), you also stimulate the cells to produce collagen and elastin. There are many different AHA acids to choose from in skincare. For aging skin, lactic acid and glycolic acid are popular choices. Lactic Acid Lactic acid is a mild AHA acid that most sensitive skin types usually tolerate. Lactic acid gently exfoliates the upper skin layers, dissolves dirt in pores, and brightens discolored and pigmented skin. What makes lactic acid unique is that it helps the skin retain moisture. The skin thus becomes less dry in a natural way. Glycolic Acid Glycolic acid comes from sugar cane and is the smallest of the AHA acids. It basically does everything lactic acid does (though it does not support moisture balance). It has a smaller molecular size and is stronger than lactic acid. Glycolic acid penetrates deeper into the skin layers and is a fantastic acid to include in an anti-aging skincare routine. Remember to always use SPF when you include acids in your skincare routine. Some acids can have effects for several weeks after use, so make it a habit to protect your skin every day with at least SPF 30 – even on cloudy and rainy days. We recommend these products with AHA acids for aging skin. Toners: Evolve Liquid Radiance Glycolic Toner – AHA fruit acids, galactoarabinan, and willow bark. Fruit Toner – antioxidants, AHA fruit acids, and hyaluronic acid. Masks: Evolve Miracle AHA 3 Minute Mask – plant and fruit enzymes including glycolic, lactic, citric, malic, and tartaric acids. Serum: i+m Naturkosmetik AHA/BHA peeling serum – contains AHA/BHA acids at concentrations of 8% and 3%. Suitable for blemished, oily, mature skin. Retinol Retinol is a type of vitamin A that takes your skincare routine to a whole new level. Retinol is popular for use on acne-prone and aging skin. The 4 main benefits of retinol: Increases collagen production and thus smooths out fine lines and wrinkles by boosting blood flow to the skin. Retinol also prevents existing collagen from breaking down. Increases the production of natural hyaluronic acid in the skin. The skin becomes plump and hydrated. Stimulates skin cells in the outermost layers to renew faster. The skin becomes smooth where dead skin is minimized and healthy skin emerges. In this way, some sun damage (discolorations, spots) can be repaired and appear less visible. Reduces the production of melanin (dark pigment in the skin) so that the skin tone becomes more even and discolorations lighter. As mentioned, the benefits are many. The major downside is that retinol often irritates the skin and causes peeling, stinging, dryness, and itching. The skin also becomes very sensitive to sunlight. Retinol itself is also unstable and breaks down easily in sunlight. Therefore, use retinol only in the evening and increase gradually so the skin has time to get used to it. Combine with vitamin C and SPF during the day for best results. In organic skincare, retinol is used sparingly and in lower doses due to its skin-irritating nature. We recommend: Serum with, among other things, retinol, vitamin C, antioxidants, and niacinamide. Facial oil with, among other things, retinol, antioxidants, vitamin D. Bio-Retinol: Natural alternatives to retinol Unlike retinol, natural retinol or bio-retinol can be used together with acids and high-dose vitamin C. Bakuchiol Bakuchiol is a natural and bioactive substance that has become a popular alternative to retinol. Bakuchiol comes from the plant Babchi (Psoralea Corylifolia). It has the same effect on the skin as retinol, but without the negative side effects. Bakuchiol can therefore also be used during the day, as it does not make the skin sensitive to sunlight. For aging skin, we recommend: Evolve Bio-Retinol + C Booster i+m Naturkosmetik Mix & Match Bakuchiol Elixir Cold-pressed organic bakuchiol oil Bidens Pilosa The extract from the plant Bidens Pilosa has also become a good alternative to retinol. Just like bakuchiol, this plant extract has a similar effect on the skin as retinol, but without irritating the skin. That’s why Bidens Pilosa extract can also be used anytime during the day. Our recommendation: Bidens Pilosa and cold-pressed oils. Bidens Pilosa and Peony extract. Lovely lip gloss with Bidens Pilosa. Hyaluronic acid Hyaluronic acid is also called hyaluronan or HA (hyaluronic acid). It is a natural substance that binds moisture in the body. Hyaluronic acid is most abundant in the skin, connective tissues, and eyes. The substance can bind incredible amounts of water. As we age, we produce less hyaluronic acid. Additionally, factors like UV rays and smoking can break down the substance, so it’s wise to include hyaluronic acid in your skincare routine. The substance itself is mild and should not cause skin irritation. There is low molecular weight hyaluronic acid that reaches the deeper skin layers. This type can irritate the skin, especially skin prone to inflammation. HA lubricates our joints and keeps the skin hydrated. It plumps the skin, gives a glow, and smooths fine lines and wrinkles. HA supports the body's natural production and use of collagen. Keep in mind that too much hyaluronic acid can dry out the skin. An overdose causes it to bind or draw moisture from the deeper layers of the skin, drying the skin from within. Usually, hyaluronic acid in one skincare product is enough, especially when it comes to low molecular weight hyaluronic acid. Use on a damp face, facial toner, or aloe vera gel before applying hyaluronic acid. Lock in the moisture with oils and nutrients. Otherwise, the moisture will evaporate from the outer skin layers. Read more about this in the section below on "Moisture and Nutrition." For mature skin, we recommend these products focusing on hyaluronic acid: Evolve 360 Eye & Lip Contour Evolve Hyaluronic Serum 200 i+m Naturkosmetik Freistil Hyaluronic Serum Evolve Hyaluronic Eye Complex i+m Naturkosmetik 2-Phase Hydrating Concentrate Serum Cleansing: Evolve Deep Clean Micellar Water – with hyaluronic acid. Niacinamide Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 often used on acne-prone skin, skin with large pores, inflamed, and aged skin. 6 anti-age benefits of niacinamide: Supports the formation of keratin. A protein important for the skin’s structure and what makes the skin firm and elastic. Strengthens the skin barrier so that moisture is better retained in the skin. minimizes pore size by gradually increasing moisture in the skin. Can strengthen healthy skin cells and protect them from harmful UV rays and oxidative stress. Clinical studies have shown that using 5% niacinamide on the skin has been able to lighten hyperpigmentation after 4 weeks. Niacinamide prevents melanin (color pigment) from being transported to the skin’s outer layer (epidermis). Minimizes fine lines and wrinkles. Probably by increasing moisture in the skin and strengthening the skin’s structure. Note: Be careful when mixing niacinamide with other products containing high doses of vitamin C or acids. If these ingredients are included in a product, they are balanced and should not cause skin irritation. Find niacinamide in these products: Serum with, among other things, niacinamide, vitamin C, antioxidants, and retinol. Facial cream with, among other things, niacinamide and antioxidants. Toner with fermented rice water, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid. Moisture and fats Last but not least. The prerequisite for smoothing wrinkles, binding moisture in the skin, and preserving moisture in the skin is precisely the availability or supply of moisture and fats. Moisture like water or substances with high water content (aloe vera, hydrosols, etc.) is essential for the skin to be rehydrated, wrinkles to be smoothed out, and to be preserved and bound by, for example, hyaluronic acid. Fats, oils, or nourishment are needed to keep the skin soft and supple. They also prevent moisture from evaporating from the skin. It is often said that fats or oils are needed to lock in moisture. Bioactive and potent ingredients are all well and good. Just don’t forget the most important thing – moisture and fats! Drink water and eat healthy fats. For aging skin, we recommend: Moisture: i+m Naturkosmetik Deep Water Hydrator Generally, all types of facial toners provide moisture Nourishment (fats, oils) without or with few bioactive ingredients: Jojoba oil i+m Creme de la Creme (contains hyaluronic acid) Evolve Hydrate & Protect Facial Cream Restorative Sea Culture Extra Rich Creme Generally, all facial oils and creams for mature skin provide nourishment. Nourishment (fats, oils) with bioactive ingredients: 100% Pure Multi-Vitamin Antioxidants Ultra Riché PM Treatment 100% Pure Multi-Vitamin Antioxidants PM Facial Oil Evolve Multi Peptide 360 Anti-Ageing Cream Evolve Age Defying Lifting Serum – innovative firming serum with 12% active ingredients, including peptides and collagen-boosting ingredients. Do natural products work as well as conventional ones against wrinkles and signs of aging? Isolated active ingredients generally work worse compared to when an active ingredient naturally exists in synergy with other substances that enhance its effect and themselves have positive effects on the skin. Rarely do we want to achieve just one result; instead, we want a combination of things for younger, fresher skin. Plant-based skincare is recognized by the skin, resembles its own components, and provides long-lasting results. We always prefer natural skincare products for the best overall effect that supports the skin barrier in the long run. Feel free to read more about the differences between conventional and organic skincare. The biggest mistakes you can make when choosing products against signs of aging. Everyone has individual skincare needs. However, there is one thing everyone has in common: all the mistakes you can make in an anti-wrinkle or anti-aging skincare routine. They can really counteract or worsen the effect of your products. In the worst case, mistakes can damage the skin. Here we highlight the most common pitfalls in a skincare routine for aging skin. You don’t have a sun protection product (SPF) in your skincare routine. SPF is the primary protection against UV damage, future wrinkles, and sunspots. It also protects any active ingredients in your products from breaking down. If you exfoliate the skin (especially with acids) or use retinol, it becomes more sensitive to sunlight. Without SPF, the skin is damaged, resulting in more signs of aging. You dry out the skin with the wrong types of products. Foaming cleansers, products with a lot of alcohol, and dry makeup like powder dry out the skin, which causes or highlights more wrinkles. You lack patience. You switch or stop using skincare products before they have had time to take effect. Too many product changes stress the skin, resulting in tired, dull, and irritated skin. You are using too many different products. You have created your own routine with too many products or potent ingredients. Either their effects cancel each other out, or the skin is overtreated and damaged. Too many products can also clog or weigh down the skin. Don’t be afraid to ask for tips and help. You are making incorrect combinations of active ingredients. Always follow the recommendations provided for each skincare product or line. Do not use vitamin C together with acids. It simply becomes too acidic (low pH) for the skin and causes too strong exfoliation. Do not combine retinol with acids. Choose either one or the other. Do not use high-dose vitamin C with retinol. However, you can try vitamin C in your morning routine and retinol in the evening. Products containing both in their formulation are fine, as the formula is balanced. You use too many and too strong ingredients You over-exfoliate by: Combines too many (strong) acids. Exfoliates the skin too often. Usually one product with acid/acids is enough. If you start early with an anti-aging skincare routine, it’s good to know that younger skin doesn’t need to be exfoliated as often as older skin. Simply because younger skin renews itself more often. Try exfoliating with milder acids or exfoliate less often if you experience skin irritation or worsened skin health. The same applies to retinol. One product with retinol in your skincare routine is usually enough. Try lower concentrations and don’t use retinol every day. You are using too much hyaluronic acid Less is more. Your skin reacts to hyaluronic acid (HA) and the skin is anything but hydrated and plump. You are simply using too much hyaluronic acid and not adding any moisture. Since HA binds moisture, there needs to be moisture for it to bind. Otherwise, it takes moisture from deeper skin layers and moves it to the upper skin layers (which easily evaporate!). HA is a popular ingredient and it can easily become too much. HA in one of your skincare products is usually enough (especially when it comes to low molecular weight hyaluronic acid). How to put together a good skincare routine against signs of aging It is very individual what your skin specifically needs to smooth out wrinkles. Too much of a good thing usually shocks the skin, resulting in irritation. Experiment to find which active ingredients your skin likes. Use one new product or active ingredient at a time. Otherwise, you won’t know what really gave an effect or caused irritation. If you have trouble deciding, you can choose to have one or two "multivitamin" products that contain a little bit of a mix of bioactive ingredients. That way you get a bit of everything in a well-composed product. If you want to create your own skincare routine, the table below can be helpful. Table with suggestions on what can be combined for an ultimate anti-aging skincare routine. *The recommendation not to use niacinamide with vitamin C is based on an old study where the test showed that the ingredients reacted with each other and could cause skin irritation. Niacinamide is a stable ingredient but reacts with vitamin C and all kinds of acids at high temperatures. Newer studies show that niacinamide together with vitamin C is stable and does not cause skin reactions. They are safe to use at room temperature. We still want to point out that niacinamide has a higher pH than both vitamin C and acids. When combining two completely different products, their pH can be affected and work less effectively, possibly resulting in a reaction. If the ingredients are included in a formulated product, there is no danger. Be careful when making your own combinations, especially with high doses of active ingredients. They offer fine combinations of natural and organic raw materials and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid. All products are vegan-friendly. Which of their creams might suit you? First, two questions. Do I need a moisturizer? We answer yes to that question. Creams are all-around products that not only hydrate and repair but also protect the skin from pollutants like dirt, oil, or makeup. Besides providing hydration, a cream helps maintain the skin’s natural protective barrier and keeps dryness, wrinkles, and fine lines in check while supporting any skin issues. We answer yes to that question. You might have just assumed that a moisturizer is a moisturizer, and that the different types don’t make much difference in the end, but that’s not the case. We believe first and foremost that a good moisturizer should contain natural ingredients that protect and enhance your skin, without harsh or counterproductive chemical ingredients that don’t contribute to long-term skin health. Most moisturizers are also designed with a specific result in mind and for specific skin types. Evolve Organic Beauty uses ingredients with intention. Their moisturizing products contain a range of peptides from coconut to moringa, which help protect the skin’s collagen fibers and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines while hydrating and soothing the skin. They use cold-pressed oils, herbal extracts, flower extracts, fruit extracts, squalene, probiotics, each with its specific property for a specific purpose. They also use hyaluronic acid, which is a molecule with a gel-like consistency naturally found in our bodies. Itchy scalp is a common problem that can have many causes. One thing is certain: the scalp is out of balance. There are therefore a few things you can do to tackle the problem. 1. General tips for itchy scalp As a first step towards a healthier scalp, you should review things that can worsen the itching or be the root cause of it. Reduce washing frequency Washing your hair every day with shampoo is not a good idea. If you exercise daily, you could try washing every other day with just water and freshen up the scalp with a toner, dry shampoo, or salt spray afterwards. Weaning your scalp off frequent washing can take time. Be patient and gradually reduce shampoo washing. Heat Heat from hair dryers and hot shower water can really dry out the scalp and even damage the hair – more than you think. Use cooler air when blow-drying if possible or increase the distance between the dryer and your hair. Lower the temperature and shower with lukewarm water instead. Moisture Putting up damp hair or going to bed with wet hair is a recipe for problems. Fungi, bacteria, and mites thrive in moisture and warmth. Change pillowcases often and always sleep with dry hair, especially if it itches more at night. The itching It can easily become a vicious circle if you scratch your scalp with fingers and nails. The scalp gets damaged and is more prone to infection. Try a cooling toner when it itches (see below point 4. moisture). 2. Change hair products Try switching the hair products that come into contact with your scalp. These can be shampoos, styling products, or hair dye, which can trigger or worsen problems like eczema, psoriasis, or seborrhea on the scalp. If you use conventional products, try ours which are natural, organic, and pure. Use organic shampoos for itchy scalp Neem Shampoo is great if your hair gets oily easily and your scalp itches. Odylique Tea Tree Herb Shampoo is excellent if your scalp itches and is also sensitive. Remember to let this shampoo work for 2-3 minutes for best effect before rinsing out. Choose this mild shampoo from Odylique if you absolutely must shampoo every day. The Golden Rose shampoo bar is suitable for oily scalp with both dandruff and itching. Organic hair styling As long as your scalp itches, avoid applying products on or near the scalp. This applies even if you use “gentle” styling products. All our hair styling products are mild. If you have an extra sensitive scalp, try fragrance-free styling products. Salt spray and conditioner spray also freshen up hair between washes. Organic dry shampoo It is perfectly fine to use a natural dry shampoo between shampoo washes. A dry shampoo absorbs excess oil, removes dry flakes, soothes the scalp, increases shine, and saves you time. Organic hair dye If it itches after coloring, you should definitely try switching hair dye. Our hair dyes are 100% plant-based and/or 100% organic. This means you avoid skin-irritating chemicals that can worsen or cause your problems. It’s worth knowing that you can be allergic to natural substances, so always do a test on your arm or neck first. For itchy scalp, we recommend Khadi or Cultivator's hair dyes. 3. Restore the scalp’s pH balance The scalp’s pH should be slightly acidic, around pH 5. Restoring the scalp’s pH is good when it itches, but also when the scalp is out of balance, such as constantly oily hair, dandruff, or dry flakes. Ekendahls hair rinse/acid rinse with apple cider vinegar is so soothing when the scalp itches. It balances the pH and closes the hair cuticle, making hair soft and shiny. Nea of Sweden Organic Vinegar Rinse is also a great choice if the scalp itches and is sensitive. It balances the pH. Malin i Ratans acid rinse consists of an infusion (tea) of hibiscus leaves and is also an excellent choice. Restore the scalp’s pH as often as you like. Do it every day, after every hair wash, or occasionally. When you have washed your hair with shampoo, it’s best to do this after shampooing, as most shampoos are alkaline. 4. Treatments for the scalp Whether you have a dry or oily itchy scalp, the recipe for balance is the same. Here are some really good tips! Moisture Make sure to not only add moisture but also something that soothes, cools, and has antiseptic or anti-inflammatory properties like a toner. A toner is easy to spray or massage into the scalp when it feels dry, itchy, or after a shower. It’s non-greasy and should not be rinsed out afterwards. Try one of these: Witch Hazel or Tea Tree Water. Nutrition Like dissolves like, so it’s smart to do an oil treatment if you have an oily scalp. Neem hair oil soothes itchy scalp and regulates sebum production. This hair oil is also good if you have a dry scalp or dandruff. The hair oil Really Good Hair Oil contains a beneficial blend of caring and nourishing oils. Scrub If your scalp flakes or is oily and feels sticky, try pure rhassoul clay. The clay scrubs away dry flakes while absorbing oil. Loelle’s fine clays can also be used in hair (besides as a face mask). Soothing treatment Rhassoul clay can wash both hair and scalp clean and thus replace shampoo. Then restore the pH balance after a clay wash/clay treatment as described above in point 3 with an acid rinse. 5. Stress Stress is one of the most common causes of itching (not just on the scalp). If stress is not the root cause of the problem, it is definitely a trigger. Meditate, sleep, exercise, and dare to say no. Usually, you can manage an itchy scalp on your own. But if the itching does not improve after a couple of weeks, medical treatment may be needed. In that case, see your doctor to find suitable treatment and the cause of the itching. Take good care of yourself!

To maintain a healthy body with healthy skin, nutritious food, sufficient hydration, and care are needed. Many skin problems can be caused by nutritional imbalances, but also by sensitivity to chemical agents in conventional skincare products. Our skin absorbs everything we apply to it. Natural skincare is best for both the body and nature Ingredients such as cold-pressed oils, organic butters, and herbal extracts soothe, nourish, hydrate, and smooth the skin. The results from natural skincare may be slower than those from conventional skincare, but they are always gentle on your skin and will not harm you in the long run. The synthetic ingredients found in conventional products can act quickly, but they are also invasive and can cause damage that is not visible at first. These conventional chemical ingredients can provide immediate satisfaction and visible results, but most of them only help you aesthetically, not deeply. Additionally, they can weaken the skin’s important protective barrier. 6 differences between natural and conventional skincare Conventional skincare Conventional products contain unnatural substances that the skin must deal with and then eliminate. They often contain synthetic oils and chemicals from the petroleum industry as well as additives like chemical preservatives and synthetic fragrances. Petroleum oils clog pores and prevent the skin from naturally absorbing moisture, drying it out from within. Conventional products often contain large amounts of substances that do nothing for the skin but are added for texture or because they are cheap. Produced in large batches with strong preservatives that keep costs low and shelf life long, so products can sit for many years without focus on freshness or quality. They cannot be broken down by nature. Natural skincare Natural skincare products are made to work with the skin and to provide nourishment and moisture. They mostly contain plant-based ingredients, naturally rich in antioxidants, vitamins, essential fatty acids, enzymes, fruit acids, and essential oils that positively affect our skin. Vegetable oils in organic skincare bind moisture, protect, and strengthen to support healthy skin. They are easily absorbed by the skin and provide something healthy. Natural skincare maximizes the content of skin-caring ingredients. Organic products are usually produced in smaller batches to ensure quality and freshness. They can be broken down by nature. Do we have to buy conventional shaving foam to get a good result when shaving? No, absolutely not. It is often uneconomical and contains a lot of synthetic additives, surfactants, pH-adjusting chemicals, and PEG substances that can be contaminated with potentially toxic impurities like 1,4-dioxane. Instead, you can shave with an organic, completely natural, liquid soap or an organic solid soap. Simple, right? For those of you with dry skin who want something moisturizing, today we’re sharing a simple recipe for a shaving cream you can make at home. It becomes a moisturizing cream with a creamy lather that works really well. The great thing about making your own shaving cream is that you know for sure it is 100% organic and natural! DIY recipe: Natural Shaving Cream Ingredients: – 2 tbsp organic, cold-pressed almond oil or jojoba oil – 0.5 dl shea butter – 0.5 dl coconut oil – 2 tbsp liquid Castile soap – 5-10 drops essential oil (optional) Instructions: 1. Gently melt the shea butter and coconut oil together over low heat in a saucepan.2. Add the oil you chose and mix well, then remove the saucepan from the heat.3. Pour into a bowl large enough to whisk in the next step. Place the bowl in the fridge until it hardens.4. Take it out of the fridge and whip the cream with a hand mixer until it becomes fluffy, about 3 minutes.5. Now pour in the liquid soap and continue whipping until everything is well combined.6. Transfer the cream directly with a spoon into a clean glass jar with a tight lid. Tips If you want your cream to have a scent, you can add one or two essential oils—add them before placing the cream in the fridge. This cream lasts quite a while, but if water gets into it, it can spoil quickly. So always take the cream out of the jar with clean, dry hands or preferably with a wooden spoon. Store the cream in a cool, dry place, such as a pantry or a cool bathroom cabinet. Ready-made Shaving Soaps We also offer ready-made shaving soaps for those who prefer that. Here are some favorites. Avocado & Cedarwood works as shampoo soap, body soap, and shaving soap—can it get any better? Boreal Forest soap is great for shaving because the castor oil produces a rich lather and the clay in the soap makes the skin slippery. Shea & Avocado Soap is a 5-in-1 product: body soap, face soap, shaving soap, shampoo, and conditioner, suitable for adults, children, and pets—a real eco bargain! Razors We also offer very nice safety razors which you can find here.

Regardless of skin type, everyone has sebaceous glands in the dermis (under the protective epidermis). Most sebaceous glands are found in the scalp, face, chest, and back. Sebaceous glands produce sebum, which is rich in fat. In skincare, sebum is often called sebum. Sebum makes the skin soft, supple, prevents dryness, and limits unfavorable bacterial growth. There can be many reasons why the skin overproduces sebum. We go through the most common causes behind oily skin. Hormones Androgens are a group of sex hormones where testosterone is the best-known hormone. Since sebaceous glands are stimulated by androgens, oily skin is common during puberty for boys. Even though girls have lower androgen levels, an increase in these hormones can cause oilier skin. Androgen levels can increase with stress, during puberty, the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause. Genetics, heredity, and age can play a role here, affecting the activity of the sebaceous glands. Weather Most people experience oilier or less dry skin during summer or when staying in a warm climate. This happens when temperature and humidity increase: If you travel on vacation from a cold to a warm climate, the skin does not have time to downregulate sebum production quickly. The skin needs less sebum when the humidity is high. You may feel that your skin is oilier even though sebum production remains unchanged. The summer sun dries out the skin. More sebum can be produced to soften and protect the skin from drying out. You sweat more because the body is trying to cool down. Sebum is needed for the sweat to stay longer on the skin. Since sebum and sweat do not mix, the skin can have small "sweat droplets" that shine. In this case, many mistake increased sweat for increased sebum production. In reality, it’s only about how much you sweat. Sweat mixed with powder makeup settles patchily and sets into fine lines on the skin. This can cause acne and various skin problems. Dry skin The skin (and body) does everything to create balance. When the skin is dry, sebum production increases in an attempt to compensate for the lack of moisture. The root cause of oily skin can therefore often be genuinely dry skin. Wrong products The cause of oily skin can also be the wrong skincare products. An overly drying cleanser or a cream lacking moisture can definitely cause imbalance in the skin and result in shiny skin. Excessive skincare routine You can also get oily skin from an intense or excessive skincare routine such as: too frequent washing. too much or harsh exfoliation, physical friction, and rubbing. too much peeling and/or acids. constantly new products introduced to the skin. With an extreme skincare routine, too much sebum can be washed away, the skin becomes irritated, and the skin barrier weakens. The skin increases sebum production to compensate for the loss and protect itself. That’s why these common tips for oily skin don’t help Regardless of the root cause of oily skin, there are certain tips you should watch out for. These tips may feel good at first but worsen the skin’s condition in the long run. Oily and shiny skin is usually the result of an imbalance in the skin. We go through a few common tips that contribute to more imbalance and even oilier skin. Dry out the skin The most common advice for oily skin is to dry out the skin: "Wash your face often" The advice to wash your face more often to keep the skin matte and free from shine and oil is a very bad idea. Especially if the advice is to wash with a strong cleansing product (that foams). Frequent washing removes too much of the sebum that needs to remain on the skin. This stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum. Even the skin's beneficial bacterial flora can be disturbed by cleansing products and excessive washing. "Use toners with alcohol" It is absolutely true that alcohol, among other things, has an antibacterial effect. A certain amount of alcohol combined with moisturizing and pH-balancing ingredients can therefore be beneficial for acne-prone skin. But an alcohol-based toner or facial water without any moisturizing and pH balancing is not good for any skin type at all. Alcohol is very drying, which only stimulates the skin’s own oil production. If you don’t know which ingredients provide moisture and pH balance, it’s best to choose an alcohol-free toner. A toner should not be mattifying but primarily moisturizing, astringent, and pH balancing. "Do not use oils" There has long been fear of vegetable oils, especially regarding oily and acne-prone skin. The advice to use oil-free products and creams is based on the fear that: vegetable oils clog pores. vegetable oils are too heavy for oilier skin types. But there are different kinds of vegetable oils! A heavy oil like coconut oil or avocado oil is usually not ideal for oily skin. However, lighter oils like safflower oil, watermelon seed oil, or the balancing jojoba oil are excellent for oily skin. Not all vegetable oils are the same. They have unique fatty acid compositions which give them different properties and therefore suit different skin types differently. Additionally, plant oils are a natural source of vitamins, antioxidants, and enzymes that support the skin's own functions. Keep in mind that most oil-free (free from vegetable oils) moisturizers and lotions contain various forms of silicones, texture agents, stabilizers, and fragrances. These neither add moisture, balance, nor strengthen the skin. There are significant differences between conventional and organic skincare, as well as between vegetable oils and petroleum-based oils that are important to know. Use salicylic acid Salicylic acid is effective on oily skin. It has good exfoliating properties and can penetrate the skin to dissolve clogged pores. The downside of salicylic acid is that it is incredibly irritating and drying. The skin can easily become red, burned, and flaky. Salicylic acid is a salicylate and a component of acetylsalicylic acid. The substance: harms children's health. has a negative impact on women's fertility. can pass into breast milk and harm the baby. Some studies have shown that salicylic acid applied topically to the skin is safe for pregnant women to use. Other studies claim that salicylic acid should absolutely not be used by pregnant women. Simply put, more studies are needed to determine a safe answer on whether salicylic acid affects us. For this reason, we do not recommend it for: children. pregnant women. women who want to become pregnant. nursing women. Salicylic acid can both reduce skin oil and counteract acne. It should be used with caution: use in low concentrations. use only one product with salicylic acid in your skincare routine. preferably do not use together with other acids and especially not with retinol and vitamin C. do not use if you have sensitive or problematic skin. How to fix oily skin What helps with oily skin and why? Think long-term when you want to get rid of oily skin. The skin is our largest organ that adjusts and adapts to imbalances (internal and external). Help the skin come into balance. For those with oily skin, it’s especially important that the skin has: pH balance. a microbiome in good balance, i.e., a good balance of beneficial bacteria. balanced sebum production. That’s why you want to use products and have a skincare routine that: in the long run balances the skin’s moisture levels and sebum production. removes dirt and excess sebum without stripping the skin’s natural sebum. makes the skin feel clean, yet smooth and hydrated. Here we clarify the biggest mistakes you can make and what actually helps with oily skin. Oily skin caused by hormones It’s difficult but not impossible when hormones are causing trouble. Whether it’s puberty or menstruation, our hormones are affected by stress, sleep, and diet. Biggest mistake: eating unhealthy, stressing as usual, going to bed late. What can help: By relaxing, doing breathing exercises, getting good and enough sleep, you can influence hormone levels. A balanced diet can also make a big difference. Cut down on inflammatory foods like red meat, sugar, wheat, and dairy products. Eat more greens, healthy fats, and drink more water. Take extra good care of yourself when your hormone levels fluctuate. Oilier skin in summer It’s common for the skin to feel less dry during the summer months. For those with oily skin, summer can be an especially challenging period. That’s why it’s important to adapt your skincare to the weather. Remember! When moisture is lost, the skin is stimulated to produce more sebum to compensate for the lost moisture. That’s why your skincare routine in summer should be adjusted to restore moisture and oil balance. Protect the skin from drying sunlight The sun’s UV rays dry out and burn the skin more than you think. Therefore, use at least SPF30 to prevent moisture loss and sunburn. Biggest mistake: skipping SPF on the face. Best SPF for oily skin: Odylique Organic Sun Screen SPF30 The skin’s moisture balance during summer The higher humidity means the skin needs less hydration. If you also avoid the sun and don’t sweat, the skin doesn’t lose as much moisture. Then you should switch to a lighter, less nourishing face cream or skip creams/oils and only use serum. The biggest mistake: using the same skincare products all year round. Best summer products for oily skin: Odylique Spot-on Serum True Balance Gel Cream from Evolve If you are in the sun and/or sweat a lot, you need to compensate for both moisture and oil loss (despite the higher humidity). When you sweat, both moisture and oil are drawn to the skin’s surface and eventually evaporate or are wiped away. Use moisturizing aloe vera or products with hyaluronic acid under your SPF in the morning and under face cream or face oil in the evening. The biggest mistake: stopping moisturizing your face. Best products for moisture and oil loss: Odylique Spot-on Serum, Evolve Hyaluronic Serum 200, or i+m Naturkosmetik Fluid Equalize Clay Hyaluron Wear less makeup when you sweat When you sweat in summer heat, moisture mixes with your makeup. Therefore, use less makeup in summer. Choose cream makeup over powder makeup, as water (sweat) causes powder makeup to clump on the skin, which can cause irritation and acne. Skip thick layers of mattifying makeup. It dries out and acts like a mask on the skin in summer heat. The biggest mistake: applying thick layers of makeup or drying mattifying makeup. Best summer makeup tip for oily skin: use less makeup and accept that the skin needs to sweat and looks more dewy when it’s warm. Use self-tanner instead of foundation: Eco by Sonya Tan Face Water. Try a lighter foundation with SPF in one: Alga Maris Tinted Sunscreen SPF30. High sebum production due to dry skin Using a strong cleansing face wash, alcohol-based toner, and various mattifying products only triggers the skin to produce more sebum. Therefore, choose products that cleanse and balance without disturbing the skin’s natural oils. The biggest mistake: using products that create a matte look by drying out the skin. Best cleansing and mattifying products for oily skin: Daily face wash – Evolve Daily Detox Facial Wash Alcohol-free toner – Inlight Beauty Floral Tonic Alcohol-free makeup remover – Evolve Deep Clean Micellar Water Face mask – Evolve True Balance SOS Mask Primer – 100% Pure Mattifying Primer Oily skin due to an excessive routine It's not just drying skincare products that cause imbalances. The biggest mistake: constantly over-treating the skin with various products, washes, masks, and exfoliations weakens the skin barrier, disrupts the pH balance, moisture levels, and the good microflora. The end result can be acne, irritated, red-flushed, oily, and sensitive skin. Best skincare routine for oily, unbalanced skin: Wash your face at most twice a day. Exfoliate and peel according to the product’s recommendation or a maximum of 2-3 times per week. Be patient. Do not constantly introduce new products to the skin. A new product should be used for 4-6 weeks to see its full potential. Oils that suit oily skin Like dissolves like, meaning – oil dissolves oil. That’s why the very best for oily skin is vegetable oils. Try it and be amazed by the fantastic result. Try both washing your face with oil and moisturizing your skin with oil. Biggest mistake: being afraid to use plant-based oils. Willow bark extract is not a pure acid. However, it has exfoliating properties and is therefore included here among the other acids. White willow bark extract White willow bark extract (white willow bark) can dissolve clogged pores, balance and control sebum production. It also has potent antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. White willow bark extract is rich in tannins, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and other minerals that soothe the skin and support cell regeneration. At the same time, it gently exfoliates, has an astringent effect, and counteracts free radicals. The great advantage is that white willow contains salicin, which is a milder version of salicylic acid. It does not irritate the skin and is gentle enough for sensitive skin. Glycolic acid Glycolic acid (glycolic acid) is especially good if you have oily skin with acne. Glycolic acid is the smallest AHA acid (alpha hydroxy acid) and therefore works deeply. It dissolves and reduces excess sebum. The acid is not recommended for sensitive skin as it can feel too intense. Lactic acid Lactic acid (lactic acid) is the mildest AHA acid. It works on the skin's surface and gently dissolves excess sebum. Also suitable for sensitive skin. Biggest mistake: using your own acid combinations, too many strong acids, and exfoliating the skin for too long or too often. The foundation of healthy, vibrant skin is a balanced acid mantle, or in other words, the skin’s protective barrier. The acid mantle is present all over the body, including the scalp. It is produced by the body and exists as an invisible film on the very surface of the skin, mainly composed of sebum, moisture-binding substances, urea, and lactic acid. Why is the skin’s acid mantle important? The acid mantle has several functions: it maintains the skin’s pH level. The balanced skin surface has a pH of about 5 – 5.5. it prevents harmful bacteria, fungi, and microorganisms from establishing themselves on the skin, as they do not thrive in the acidic environment. it preserves the balance between moisture and oil on the skin’s surface. it protects the skin from internal and external attacks. What happens when the acid mantle is disrupted? When our acid mantle becomes unbalanced or damaged, skin problems can occur such as: dryness and dehydration. overproduction of sebum to restore balance. skin irritations (eczema). sensitivity. blemishes and acne. Every time we wash our skin, we also wash away a bit of the acid mantle. To keep it intact and the skin healthy, it’s important to review your cleansing products for the face, body, and hair. Many skin and hair care products do not have the same pH as the skin and can disrupt the protective acid mantle. If you use products with drying surfactants or wash too often, you risk washing away too much of the acid mantle. The body rebuilds it, but the skin’s pH can become unbalanced. This creates an opportunity for bacteria and microorganisms to take hold, the skin struggles to retain moisture, and begins to overproduce sebum—a condition where acne bacteria thrive. The acid mantle can also be affected by excessive sun exposure, poor diet, certain medications, and internal and external stress. How to restore the acid mantle If you feel your acid mantle has been disrupted, we recommend using: a mild, preferably non-foaming cleanser for the face such as Odylique – Creamy Coconut Cleanser. a gentle shower gel like the ones we offer. a shampoo that cleanses without drying out hair or scalp, such as Bruns Frisörer nr 04. a moisturizing oil or cream. For example, evening primrose oil can be used on the face, eye area, and body. i+m Sensitive Moisturizing Cream is good for dry skin. Choose i+m Sensitive Intensive Cream if your skin is very dry. A facial oil and cream can be combined during winter for extra protection, applying the oil first.
