You’re probably familiar with the feeling: the longer a stressful period lasts, the harder it becomes to unwind. But it’s not just about the stress itself. Research also shows that stress can affect the body’s magnesium levels. Here we explain what happens.
Stress is often described as a mental burden, but for the body, stress is primarily a biological reaction. In just a few seconds, it shifts from recovery mode to alertness. The heart beats faster, stress hormones are released, and several processes change to give the body the best possible chance to handle the situation.
One of those changes involves magnesium.
The body takes magnesium from its reserves
When your stress system is activated, the magnesium in your body starts to be redistributed. Some of the mineral temporarily leaves many of the body’s cells and moves into the bloodstream. (Exactly why this happens is still unknown to researchers, but it seems to be a result of the chemical balance in the body changing as it shifts into alert mode.)
Once the magnesium is in the blood, the kidneys can then eliminate some of it through urine.
If it were just an occasional stress reaction now and then, it wouldn’t matter much. But if the body stays stuck in stress and alert mode for too long, losses over time can exceed replenishment. That’s why researchers have long described prolonged stress as a possible cause of gradually declining magnesium levels.
Less magnesium = weaker stress brake
What makes this more complex is that magnesium is not only affected by stress. It also helps the body manage stress.
Magnesium helps regulate nerve cell activity and acts as a natural brake when the nervous system is becoming overactive. If levels drop, that brake can become less effective, and the nervous system risks reacting more strongly to stressors. In other words, it becomes harder to return to calm and recovery.
And this is how the vicious cycle arises. Stress can cause the body to lose more magnesium, while lower magnesium levels can make it harder to handle the next period of stress.
When replenishment can’t keep up
Many think recovery is about sleeping more or taking it easier. Those are of course important parts, but the body also needs the right building blocks to effectively switch back from stress to recovery.
And since stress often also affects appetite, sleep, and eating habits, it becomes even harder to refill the magnesium reserves the body uses. You might not eat as regular or proper meals, snack more often, or seek energy boosts from quick carbs and sugar.
Magnesium is an important part of a bigger picture
Research does not show that everyone who feels stressed has a magnesium deficiency or needs a supplement. However, there are clear biological explanations for why magnesium plays an important role when the nervous system is under prolonged strain, and why deficiency can occur.
Magnesium is of course just one part of a larger whole in managing stress, but giving the body enough of this important mineral can give the nervous system better conditions to do what it’s designed for.
