Black seed oil: 11 traditional uses for skin & hair
Black cumin oil is packed with over 100 substances such as important trace elements, vitamins, amino acids, proteins, fatty acids, and much more. Black cumin seeds and their oil have been used for centuries by the ancient Greeks, Egyptians, in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, and the benefits are many. The benefits of using black cumin oil Nigellone and thymoquinone are the most studied substances in black cumin seeds. They are interesting because they have potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-histamine effects both internally and externally. Both the seeds and the oil have historically been used for: Allergies Skin problems such as acne, eczema, psoriasis Hair loss, scalp issues Inflammation Upset stomach Omega 3, 6, and 9 Black cumin oil is naturally rich in essential fatty acids like Omega 3 and 6. It has therefore been popular to take internally for: High blood pressure Dry skin and skin problems High cholesterol How do you use black cumin oil? Internally The recommended amount is 1-3 teaspoons of black cumin oil per day. The oil has a peppery and slightly bitter aroma. Note! Black cumin oil should not be taken by pregnant or breastfeeding women, those about to undergo surgery, those on medication, or those with anemia, diabetes, or epilepsy. 1. Eat black cumin oilThe easiest way is to take a teaspoon of oil with each meal. The oil can be taken as is or mixed with lemon juice or honey to mask the taste.2. Drizzle on foodBlack cumin oil is delicious drizzled over yogurt or salad.3. Add to foodBoost your smoothie or whip up a creamy sauce or dressing with black cumin oil. It can also be mixed into stews and similar dishes. Keep in mind that the oil breaks down when heated and should therefore be added at serving after the food is cooked. 4. Drop into a warm drinkAdd a few drops or 1 teaspoon of black cumin oil to a cup of warm tea. Inhale the aroma 5. MassageMassage pure black cumin oil directly onto the chest or dilute it with another carrier oil and massage in. Place your hands over your nose and breathe in the aroma. The scent of the oil is said to be muscle-relaxing and can be soothing for troublesome coughs and labored breathing. Externally 6. Apply to the skinBlack cumin oil can be applied directly to the skin as is or dabbed on acne, skin problems, skin irritations, insect bites, red and swollen skin. It can be diluted with other oils if it feels too strong. The oil can also be applied to damp skin or mixed with a little water for easier absorption. 7. Steam bathAdd 10 drops of black cumin oil to a steaming hot water bath. Cleanse your face from dirt and makeup. Carefully lean your face over the water bath (be careful not to burn yourself) and cover with a towel to trap the steam. Steam your face for 5 minutes. This is especially good for clogged pores, impure skin, and acne-prone skin. 8. Scalp treatmentFor scalp issues such as dandruff, fungus, inflammation, or hair loss, pure or diluted black cumin oil can be massaged directly into the scalp. Leave on for at least 30 minutes and then wash out with shampoo (massage in shampoo first, then water). It is also fine to mix a few drops of black cumin oil with your shampoo. 9. Hair maskFor a moisturizing treatment, black cumin oil can be massaged into the lengths of the hair. Tie your hair up in a bun or wrap a towel around your hair and leave on for at least 30 minutes. Then wash out the oil with shampoo (massage in shampoo first, then water). It is also good to mix a few drops of black cumin oil into your regular conditioner to care for extra dry hair and strengthen damaged hair.

Dulse seaweed is one of the most nutritious foods on earth, used as food, flavoring, and medicine by people on every continent since ancient times. Dulse in Cooking Dulse is considered one of the most exquisite seaweeds with its salty, slightly smoky flavor, yet also a mild, pleasant taste with a chewy texture. You can use it raw in a salad or add it rinsed or blanched to, for example, a stew, soup, vegetables, or noodles. Of course, we have several favorite recipes with dulse, and here is one created by Andrew Olson “The one ingredient chef” on oneingredientchef.com. He makes delicious recipes based on the belief that food is power, and that with every bite we decide whether that power works for us or against us. Inspiring! This particular dulse recipe works just as well as a spread on a sandwich or as a dip for vegetables. Lemon-Flavored Dulse Dip/Spread Recipe for about 2.5 dl (1 cup) Ingredients:1.2 dl cashew nuts4 tbsp sunflower seeds3 tbsp tahini1 whole lemon (juice + grated zest)1-2 garlic cloves3 tbsp sun-dried tomatoes (dry, without oil)3 tablespoons dulse flakes1 pinch of salt (optional)Water (as needed for consistency) Step One Soak the cashew nuts and sunflower seeds for at least 2 hours in about 7-10 dl (3-4 cups) of water. Also soak the sun-dried tomatoes in boiling water for about 30 minutes. Pour enough water to cover them well. Step Two Drain the water from the nuts/seeds and place them in a food processor with tahini, lemon juice, grated lemon zest, and 1-2 garlic cloves. Pulse in the mixer until everything is broken down and the texture is fairly creamy. Step Three Drain the water from the sun-dried tomatoes and chop them. Then add them to the mixer with dulse flakes, salt (optional), and a little water (as needed) to achieve a spreadable/dippable but not watery consistency. Taste and adjust with more ingredients as needed. Step Four Chill! Like most nut-based recipes, this gets even better after chilling for 2-3 hours. When the ingredients have a chance to rest, the flavors develop. Serve with crackers, bread, carrots, celery, or other tasty snacks!

I love sea salad, seaweed, saltwater algae. Yes, a beloved child has many names. They are incredibly rich in nutrients and can be used both in cooking and baking. I have even dedicated an entire blog post where I have gathered all my favorites on Morotsliv. Dulse One of these favorites is dulse, or Palmaria palmata in Latin and söl in Icelandic. It is a red algae that stands out quite distinctly from other algae due to both its color and taste. Properties As you may know, algae are very nutrient-rich, and dulse is no exception. Dulse contains a lot of fiber and protein and is rich in vitamins, trace elements, healthy fatty acids, and antioxidants. Dulse is actually said to contain the most iron of all algae and has high levels of iodine and potassium. Dulse contains alginic acid, which can bind heavy metals in the body and acts as a natural detox. Dulse has been shown to be anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antithrombotic. Dulse has 20–50 centimeter long fern-like leaves with a deep pink or reddish-purple color. It grows on the northern coasts of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It is common that the dulse we can buy here comes from the clean waters of Iceland or the Faroe Islands. Dulse is commonly found from June to September and can be hand-harvested at low tide. Dulse in Cooking It can be used raw, cooked, soaked, or dried. When dried, it has a leathery texture and becomes soft and slippery when soaked. It has a slightly nutty, smoky flavor of salty licorice, violet, umami, a bit of acidity, and a scent of the sea. When we think of seaweed and algae, we often think primarily of Japanese cuisine, but dulse has long been used in cooking in Ireland, Scotland, and France, where it is eaten raw with fish and potatoes. It is used, for example, as a flavoring in ice cream, cream cheese, and bread and can also be bought in tablet form as a dietary supplement. Fresh dulse can be eaten directly before drying, and in Iceland, there is a tradition of eating it with butter. Dulse can be used as vegan bacon if you fry or deep-fry the algae, and it can also be fried into chips or baked in the oven, preferably with cheese on top. It also adds depth to creamy rice dishes like risotto and paella. You can also bake bread with dulse. For example, the Irish “White soda bread” contains dulse. Or make desserts with chocolate or bake a sticky chocolate cake with dulse. Dulse can also be used in soups and salads or as a topping on bread. Finely chopped, the algae works as a flavor enhancer thanks to its rich umami taste. You can sprinkle it on any dish. Preparation Most algae should be soaked before cooking, often for at least 20 minutes, so they swell. Some can swell up to 10 times their dried size. If the algae is too salty or contains sand, it should be rinsed clean with cold water. Red algae, such as dulse, can be boiled whole or chopped into pieces. Fresh or soaked, it keeps for about a week in the refrigerator. Dulse can also be eaten dried, usually as flakes or powder sprinkled on salads or sandwiches. It also works as a flavoring and coloring for butter, soups, hummus, dips, dough, stews, etc. Dried dulse pieces can also be eaten as chips or cocktail snacks. Sticky Chocolate Cake with Dulse As mentioned, dulse can be used both in cooking and baking, and my absolute favorite is probably this sticky chocolate cake with dulse that makes my mouth water just thinking about it. If you choose coconut oil instead of butter, you get a vegan version, and for a gluten-free version, you can use gluten-free flour mix. Recipe: 150 g butter or coconut oil 1.5 dl water 2 tbsp agave, sukrin, or fiber syrup 2 dl granulated sukrin, raw sugar, or other sweetener of choice 3 dl sifted spelt flour or gluten-free flour mix 1 dl raw cocoa powder 0.5 tsp vanilla powder 1-2 tsp dulse flakes 1 pinch sea salt Coconut oil or butter and cocoa powder for the pan. Instructions: Preheat the oven to 175°C. Grease the pan (about 20 cm in diameter) with coconut oil or butter and cocoa powder. Melt the fat with syrup and water. Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl. Combine the dry and wet ingredients. Pour the batter into the pan and bake in the oven for about 30 minutes, depending on how gooey or firm you want it. Let it cool in the refrigerator for a couple of hours before serving. Eat with coconut cream, coconut chips, fresh berries, and decorate with dulse flakes. Good luck!
Read moreSulfate-free shampoo: 8 benefits for hair and scalp
Sulfate-free shampoos have long been a hot topic among hair enthusiasts and hairdressers. Why are sulfates used so widely in the hair industry if they are bad for hair? In this blog post, we explain what sulfates do to our hair and the benefits of a sulfate-free shampoo. What are sulfates? Sulfates are soap agents found in everything from toothpaste to detergents. They foam a lot and are very effective at dissolving oils. Common sulfates in your shampoo are sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), and ammonium laureth sulfate (ALS). There are more sulfate variants that usually end with sulfate and sulfonate. Why are sulfates popular in shampoos? Sulfates reduce surface tension and make it easier for a shampoo to foam when in contact with water. The more sulfates, the easier your shampoo spreads over the hair and creates a rich lather. The shampoo becomes incredibly economical. A small amount is enough to wash the hair thoroughly. That's where all the benefits end, as they are a bit too good at washing away oils. Why you should use sulfate-free shampoo A shampoo that cleans too strongly irritates the scalp and damages the hair over time. A shampoo that strips oils too aggressively also makes it harder for the hair's cuticle to "close." Hair problems start when the cuticles are open. Then a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner can restore hair quality. These are common signs that you need a sulfate-free shampoo: frizzy hair sensitive and irritated scalp dry hair and scalp damaged hair split ends dull and lifeless hair 1. Restore shine to your hair Do you use a lot of conditioner, hair oil, and hair masks? That's because the cuticle needs fat and moisture to close properly. In the final state, the hair is protected from external stress. When hair is completely stripped of oils, nourishing and moisturizing products become essential to restore smooth strands and shiny hair. Try switching to a sulfate-free shampoo that doesn't wash away all the oils and moisture. 2. Get stronger hair When the hair's cuticle is open, the hair not only becomes dry and rough. It becomes more hollow, and the cuticle no longer protects the inner core of the strands (cortex). The cortex plays a major role in hair strength and is where the hair's natural color pigment is found. Without protection, hair is directly damaged by sunlight, heat styling, chemicals, and friction. Hair becomes frizzy, damaged, and breaks easily. Prevent this by washing your hair without sulfates. 3. Preserve moisture and proteins Are you investing in moisturizing and protein-rich hair products? That's exactly right to maintain stronger and more beautiful hair. The next step is to start washing with a sulfate-free shampoo. Otherwise, both moisture and proteins are washed out of the hair without any positive effect. 4. Enhance curls and natural hair fall Do you have trouble enhancing your natural curls or has the natural fall disappeared? A shampoo that cleans too strongly removes moisture from the hair. Without moisture, hair becomes stiff, straighter, and hard to manage. Get your curls and natural fall back by completely excluding sulfates from your hair care routine. 5. Get rid of stubborn acne If you have tried everything and still have acne problems, it might be a good idea to review your shampoo. This is especially true if you have acne or blemishes: around the hairline on the neck and back on the shoulders and chest Sulfates damage not only the hair. The skin becomes disturbed and the skin barrier weakens. Many experience that acne problems worsen due to sulfates. Review all your hair and skin products with cleansing properties. 6. Make your hair color last longer Sulfates do not wash away your natural hair color. However, color on dyed hair fades faster. The stronger the shampoo, the more color is washed out. This especially applies to organic herbal hair dyes and toners. Even permanent chemical dyes fade if washed shortly after coloring. An easy way to preserve color is to try a mild sulfate-free shampoo. 7. Get rid of scalp problems Sulfates affect not only the hair but also the scalp. A scalp without its natural oils can itch, develop dry flakes, have disturbed pH levels, and trigger overproduction of oil. A healthy scalp is a prerequisite for healthy hair. Get rid of or at least reduce your scalp problems by choosing a gentler shampoo. 8. Prevent hair loss Sulfates do not cause hair loss but can indirectly trigger and worsen the condition. If hair loss is already a problem, it won't improve with dry and damaged hair follicles. A dry scalp also increases sebum production. Too much sebum (natural skin oil) can definitely clog hair follicles and create a favorable environment for bacteria and fungi. This in turn can cause hair loss. Therefore, try sulfate-free shampoo for a longer period for a scalp in better balance. This is how sulfate-free shampoos work Sulfate-free shampoos instead clean with other gentler cleansing agents. They produce a softer foam and: clean hair without washing away natural oils and moisture foam less are less irritating to scalp and skin Because of these properties, they may initially feel less economical, that the hair doesn't get clean and gets dirty again faster. The transition to a sulfate-free shampoo may require an adjustment period. Keep in mind that: stop feeding hair and scalp with hard-to-dissolve chemicals and substances like silicones initially, two shampoos may be needed It takes a bit more effort to distribute the shampoo and massage it into the scalp. Give the shampoo time to dissolve oils and dead skin cells. Help clean by massaging hair and scalp. Rinse thoroughly and help by massaging with your fingers so dust and dead skin cells rinse off more easily. You may need more frequent hair washes before sebum production is regulated. The scalp may need several sulfate-free weeks to balance. So be patient! When hair and scalp have adjusted to gentler shampoos, your sulfate-free shampoo will feel more concentrated, easier to distribute, and clean well. The hair will also stay clean for several days. Last but not least, both hair and scalp will feel so much better. Which sulfate-free shampoos are best? The easiest way is to buy an organic (certified) shampoo. Then you get a sulfate-free, paraben-free, silicone-free shampoo. Which one is best depends on factors like hair type, hair quality, and washing frequency. Here we give our best tips on really good sulfate-free shampoos to start with. The best transition shampoo If you want to switch from a strong foaming shampoo with sulfates, it’s best to choose one that is sulfate-free but still foams well. This is so the difference isn’t too big and the transition feels smooth. You can also continue using your so-called transition shampoo. You can gradually switch to an even milder shampoo for gentler washes. Eco Cosmetics Repair Shampoo is the most popular organic transition shampoo for those who want sulfate-free hair care. What can be tricky with organic sunscreens is the white film you can get from mineral filters (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide). Different sunscreens give different cosmetic results. I have therefore tested a bunch of organic sunscreens that I will compare and review. My skin is generally dry with a medium-dark tone. I always use only organic sunscreen, as it is a more sustainable choice and better for both skin and the environment. Read more about what distinguishes an organic, physical sunscreen from a chemical one. Dr Sannas SPF 30, 100 ml Dr Sannas sunscreen is relatively new to me. The first impression is white, runny but thick feeling on the skin. When I continue to massage the cream in, I see how quickly it absorbs and leaves a barely noticeable light film on my skin. I imagine it doesn’t show at all on lighter skin tones. The feeling turns into a dry and almost matte finish. The best part is that when I wear facial oil under the sunscreen, the glow shows through. The sunscreen works excellently under makeup. The only time it doesn’t work so well is with gel (e.g., gel serum, aloe vera gel). If a gel product is on the skin, this sunscreen tends to flake. It is very lightly scented and formulated without known allergens, which is a big plus. The bonus is that it contains probiotics that balance the skin’s microflora. It also has a touch of mild malic acid that loosens dead skin (great for acne-prone, congested skin). I like this on both body and face during sweaty summer days, as it is non-sticky and matte. Dr Sannas Sunscreen SPF 30 Eco Cosmetics Sun milk SPF 50, 75 ml This is a thick and nourishing sunscreen. Slightly difficult to spread (compared to the others I have tested) but once worked in, it leaves a faint white film. I think the white disappears after a while in the sun. That’s not bad for SPF 50. I know many fair-skinned people who like to use this on their face, as the white doesn’t show on lighter skin tones. Plus points for being developed for sensitive skin and scented with non-allergenic essential oils. Personally, I find it a bit too sticky for my taste and only use it when I’m abroad in strong sun and need a thick layer of SPF 50. The sunscreen comes in a tube with a flip cap. The opening could be smaller as it tends to dispense too much. Eco Cosmetics Sun Milk is vegan-friendly. Eco Cosmetics Sun Milk SPF 50 Alga Maris Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+, 100 ml This is a sunscreen spray that immediately becomes matte and non-sticky on the skin. For a spray, it still forms a fairly thick layer that stays put. This is perfect for times when you need really good sun protection and don’t want to get sunburned. It really provides high sun protection all day long. It leaves a white film on my medium-dark skin. I expected nothing else since it is SPF 50+. I use SPF 50+ when it’s super hot, as everyone is shiny anyway from either sweat or sunscreens. It’s so hot that it’s not even worth wearing a lot of makeup. A big plus is that it stays put, the matte finish, a little white but at least matte and protected. It is also fragrance-free and suitable for sensitive skin. A tip if you want to look good in the city is to first apply oil to the skin. Yes, Alga Maris sunscreen spray works well with oils. Just massage until the white film disappears completely. However, it won’t feel matte afterward because of the oil. Choose a light oil like argan oil to minimize stickiness. Overall, I think this is a very good, if not the best, SPF 50+ I have tried. A sunscreen you can trust when it’s hottest. If you’re looking for a sunscreen spray with a nice summery coconut scent that doesn’t leave a white film, you can check out Alga Maris sunscreen spray SPF 30. Alga Maris Sunscreen Spray SPF50+ 100 ml Eco Cosmetics for children & babies SPF 50+, 50 ml A sunscreen you can trust. This one is thick, sticky, and white, but has done its job every time. It’s easy to apply a thicker layer, which you want on lively children. I think the white becomes less visible after a while in the warm sun. Of course, it also works great on adults when the sun is really strong. Available both with and without fragrance. The sunscreen comes in a 50 ml pump bottle with a cap (which usually stays in the bag). Remove the cakes and let them sit for 5 minutes outside the oven, then remove the cake pans and let the cakes cool on a wire rack. Proceed to the topping. Whip the cold coconut cream with maple syrup until fluffy using an electric mixer or similar. To assemble the cake, place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of whipped coconut cream on top. If making a strawberry cake, spread the mashed strawberries here. Place the second cake layer on top and spread coconut cream over the entire top and sides. Put some coconut cream in a piping bag and make small neat peaks on the cake. Then sprinkle your sprinkles over the cake or add your fresh strawberries! If you prefer to make the cake in several layers with, for example, a coconut cream layer and a strawberry layer, be very careful when cutting the cakes as they can break. But with a little finesse, everything works! Keep the cake chilled until ready to enjoy!
Read moreComparison: The 3 Best 5-MTHF Supplements on the Market
Today, there is much talk about vitamin B9, also called folate, folic acid, or 5-MTHF. The vitamin that is so important for many functions in the body. To avoid unnecessary confusion, we will start by clarifying the differences between these terms. What is folate? Folate is a group of naturally occurring, water-soluble forms of vitamin B9. It is one of our important B vitamins that we need to get every day. We find folate in green leafy vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, asparagus, but also in citrus fruits, bananas, beans, and several other foods! Keep in mind that folate is heat-sensitive and easily destroyed by heating. If you have difficulty raising your folate levels, it is probably not enough to just eat folate-rich foods. It can be due to illnesses and genetic factors that make it difficult to metabolize folate from food, so folate supplements may also be needed. What is folic acid? Folic acid is what is often referred to when talking about vitamin B9, but it is a synthetic, water-soluble form commonly found in dietary supplements. Although folic acid can be easily absorbed in the intestine, some people have trouble metabolizing folic acid from supplements. The folic acid form can even inhibit methylation and block natural folate. It is an enzyme, the DHFR enzyme, that is blocked by folic acid. Today, it is common to have disturbances in the MTHFR gene that prevent folic acid from being used by the body until it is converted to folate. A DNA test can tell you what your genes look like. Overdosing on folic acid, especially when taken as a supplement, can cause sleep problems and irritability. Some may lose their appetite or feel nauseous. What is 5-MTHF? 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, or 5-MTHF, is a natural form of vitamin B9 and the most biologically active form. It is easy for the body to absorb and use and has therefore become popular in supplements recently. Research suggests that 5-MTHF is more effective as a supplement than folic acid. The simplest way to solve the problem with folic acid is to use 5-MTHF supplements that do not require a series of chemical reactions for your body to use it properly, since 5-MTHF is already bioactive. Folate can also mask damage to the nervous system caused by B12 deficiency-related blood disorders, but 5-MTHF does not. Health benefits of folate and 5-MTHF It is especially important that pregnant women get plenty of folate early in pregnancy, but also some time before becoming pregnant, as folate is needed for the fetus's nervous system development and reduces the risk of neural tube defects in the fetus. Men should also ensure they are not deficient in folate before and while trying to conceive. (It takes about 3 months for a sperm to be ready for ejaculation.) The beneficial effect is achieved with a daily intake of at least 400 µg (= micrograms) of folic acid for three months before and at least three months after fertilization. Folate also contributes to normal amino acid synthesis, normal blood formation, normal homocysteine metabolism, and the normal function of the immune system. Additionally, it can reduce tiredness and fatigue. It is difficult to determine on your own if you have a folate deficiency. Your nutrition therapist has tests to establish this. Just like with all other individual B vitamins, you get the best effect if you also take a broad-spectrum supplement of the entire family of different B vitamins. Here you can read about how it is used therapeutically at Morotsliv. Helhetshälsa EKO-Folsyra is a Swedish product from Helhetshälsa, a plant-based, active folic acid supplement consisting of 500 µg methylfolate (that is 5-MTHF) from organic spinach. EKO-Folsyra comes in 60 vegetable capsules with a dose of 500 µg. The dosage for adults is 1 capsule per day with food. The capsule can be opened and the contents sprinkled on food or drink. The ingredients in this are organic inulin from Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus) and organic spinach extract (Spinacia oleracea L.). The vegetable capsule is made of cellulose. Contains traces of citrus and coconut. Vimergy The American brand Vimergy contains 5 mg folate as 6S-5-methyltetrahydrofolate. It also contains 500 µg vitamin B12 as 50% methylcobalamin and 50% adenosylcobalamin. It is good to combine 5-MTHF with vitamin B12, as large doses of 5-MTHF can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency. But B12 also helps increase folate absorption. The recommended dosage for adults is 1 capsule once a day, and since a bottle contains 60 capsules, it lasts for 2 months. This contains 6S-5-methyltetrahydrofolate, methylcobalamin, adenosylcobalamin, and the capsule made of cellulose. The folate comes from the glucosamine salt of (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate, which is a patented form of highly bioavailable methylfolate structurally analogous to the reduced and active form of folate. Thorne In the American brand Thorne, we find 5 mg folate as L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate and 2 mg L-leucine. Thorne's products are naturally free from soy and gluten and are made without unnecessary additives or preservatives. The recommended dosage for adults is 1-2 capsules per day with food, and since a bottle contains 60 capsules, it lasts 1-2 months. Other ingredients are the capsule made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (from coniferous trees), microcrystalline cellulose (stabilizer), and silicon dioxide (filler). Similarities and differences All three contain active and easily absorbed forms of 5-MTHF and all have cellulose-based capsules. Thorne's capsules are smaller, but all can be opened and sprinkled over food if you do not like swallowing capsules. Helhetshälsa's has the lowest dosage, making it excellent for both men and women planning pregnancy. Most start with 500 µg – 1 mg of 5-MTHF for normal use, as the optimal daily dose is 400–800 µg. Certain circumstances may require 1-5 mg or more. Thorne's and Vimergy's supplements contain 10 times more 5-MTHF than Helhetshälsa's and also have other added nutrients. Vimergy is a good option if you have a vitamin B12 deficiency, and Thorne is suitable for those who want to build muscle thanks to the L-leucine content. Who should NOT take 5-MTHF? Avoid 5-MTHF if you are allergic to folic acid in crops or multivitamins (skin rash, chest tightness, or difficulty breathing). Talk to a nutrition therapist, functional medicine practitioner, or doctor if you have previously been diagnosed with B12 deficiency, if you have bipolar disorder, or if you are on medication. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive, you can also ask for advice to determine the appropriate dose. Remember to keep supplements out of reach of children and not to exceed the recommended dose. Supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied diet. During pregnancy, a multivitamin/mineral for pregnant women is also recommended.

Summer is here with sun and swimming. Many of us want to get a beautiful tan, and of course, we are grateful that the sun helps us produce the necessary vitamin D when its UVB rays reach our skin. But too much sun can cause sunburn and damage the skin. When choosing sun protection, organic sunscreens are preferable. It is also better to choose physical sunscreens instead of chemical ones, as chemical sunscreens may contain nanoparticles and other unpleasant chemicals. Alga Maris Laboratories de Biarritz produces organic sunscreens with physical protection under the name Alga Maris. They also have their own patented Alga-Gorria extract from red seaweed, which neutralizes free radicals and protects against skin damage caused by sun rays. Sun spray for body and face Alga Maris sun sprays are suitable for both body and face. It resembles a sun lotion, but thanks to its thin consistency, it is very easy to apply and the white film that usually forms from natural sunscreen is barely noticeable. Usage It is very easy to use as it comes in a practical spray tube. Shake the tube first and spray on the body. Rub in thoroughly. Remember to apply several times during the day, especially after swimming. The sun spray is suitable for both adults and children over 3 years old. It is available with both SPF30 and SPF50 for those who burn easily or want to be extra cautious. For children, at least SPF50 is always recommended as protection. Celery juice is a powerful juice that has spread like wildfire and become hugely popular. Many people have been helped with health problems through celery juice, and understandably, many questions arise about how to best use celery juice to feel good. In this article, we try to summarize what is important to consider to make celery juice work for you, as well as common mistakes to avoid. How do I do a celery juice course? The basic recommendation is to drink 4.7 dl (16 ounces) of freshly pressed celery juice on an empty stomach every morning. You can either do this as a course for 30 days or for as long as you want. Many choose to drink celery juice daily as often as they can – for the rest of their lives. In some cases, it is recommended to drink more than this – up to 9.5 dl per day, either all at once or divided between morning and afternoon. The important thing is to drink 100% pure and freshly pressed celery juice, at least 30 minutes before breakfast and/or before dinner. It is fine to drink lemon water 30 minutes before, and it is recommended to eat a (preferably fat-free) breakfast about 30-40 minutes after the juice. A few points that are important to remember: Drink only pure, undiluted celery juice with no other ingredients – not even water (or ice). Do not eat or drink anything else before or within 30 minutes after. Preferably drink the juice in the morning; either on a completely empty stomach or 30 minutes after a glass of lemon water. Drink the juice freshly pressed if possible. If not, you can store it in a sealed glass jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours – but it will be less potent. Preferably do this every day for at least 30 days to truly experience the effects of celery juice. How do I make celery juice? Pressing fresh celery juice is very easy. All you need is a slow juicer or a high-speed blender. Take a bunch of organic celery, cut off the "bottom," and rinse the celery stalks under running water. 2A. If you have a juicer: Run the stalks one at a time through the machine. Feel free to strain the juice through a tea strainer or similar to remove any fibers or bits. Drink immediately! 2B. If you have a blender: Cut the celery into 2-3 cm pieces. Put them in the blender and blend until it becomes a liquid. Do not add water or anything else. Then strain out the fibers through a nut milk bag or a fine kitchen sieve. Drink immediately! Frequently asked questions and answers Which juicer is best? If you have a juicer or a blender at home – use it! Drinking celery juice is always best. That’s the simple answer. If you are looking for a new juicer and want the best one specifically for celery, we have a few points to consider here. A so-called "slow juicer" is the best category of juicer to use. They are quieter than centrifuges or blenders and produce more (and in our experience tastier / less bitter) juice from celery. The Omega Juicer MM900HDS is a good and affordable juicer specifically for celery, but there are some considerations we think you should think about before buying. The MM900HDS is not optimal for many other fruits and vegetables, although it works for those as well. Then the Omega Juicer MM1500 is better for you if you want an all-in-one juicer. It has the same celery function as the MM900 but is better for juicing and mashing other fruits, nuts, and vegetables. With an MM1500, you can even make ice cream, pasta, nut butter, nut milk, baby food, and much more. Slow juicers with twin gears (such as Angel Juicer or Greenstar Elite) are, in our opinion, the absolute best juicers available. They are even more efficient and produce a fantastic, clean juice from virtually all fruits, vegetables, and leaves – including celery. They also tend to last a very long time and have fewer issues over time compared to other options. The downside, of course, is that they cost more and take up somewhat more space in the kitchen. Do I have to use organic celery? Celery is one of the vegetables with the most pesticide residues from conventional farming. So organic is definitely best. If for some reason you can’t get organic celery, you can buy conventional and wash it thoroughly before you How do I best store my celery? Celery is best stored in the fridge and protected from excessive air circulation. If you buy celery in a store, it is often packed in plastic bags which helps to extend its shelf life. You can also store them in the vegetable drawer at the bottom of the fridge to protect them. This way, fresh celery can last up to two weeks in the fridge. I don’t like the taste – what can I do? One reason for this could be that you have a strong need for detox and that the celery juice kick-starts this process. This can make the taste seem bitter or unpleasant. One way to get past this is to start gently; drink 100 ml the first day and slowly increase up to 470 ml or more as it becomes easier to drink. The bitter and slightly sharp taste that can occur can also be influenced by the type of celery: If you have celery with thin stalks and lots of leaves, the flavor tends to be sharper. One solution is to look for thicker celery next time you shop, and to cut off the leaves before juicing. One last thing we’ve noticed is that the same celery tastes different depending on how we juice it. In a blender, the flavor is often sharper than in a slow juicer. Are there any alternatives to celery juice? Not really. But if you can’t get celery or don’t have access to a juicer – for example when traveling – there are other drinks that are said to offer some similar health benefits and are definitely better than nothing. Here is a short list: Lemon water: Half a lemon or lime squeezed into 5 dl of water. A good start to the day whether or not you have access to celery juice. Cucumber juice: Cucumber gives a very mild, beneficial, and hydrating juice. Easy to make in a juicer or blender. Ginger water: Grate a few cm of ginger and let it steep in 1 liter of water overnight. Then strain and mix with lemon and raw honey. Aloe vera water: If you have access to fresh aloe vera, you can scoop out about a 5 cm piece and blend the gel with 5 dl of water. Specific advice for those using an Omega Juicer to make celery juice If you have an Omega MM900HDS or Omega MM1500, here is a small reminder list to get the most out of your juicer: Make sure the celery cap with the green rubber ring is properly installed. If it is on backwards or in the wrong place, it can fall out or interfere with juicing. Feed the celery slowly so the machine can keep up, one stalk at a time. Let most of the juice drain out before pushing in more. Use the reverse mode if you see it clumping together. Use chilled celery straight from the refrigerator for best results. The setting on the celery endcap is important: Start by turning the celery cap just a few cm clockwise so that it is secured to the mount; this gives the least resistance for the fibers to come out. If you want to increase juice extraction, you can gently turn the endcap counterclockwise to increase resistance for the fibers to come out. NOTE: If the pressure gets too high, the press housing can become warm, which can damage both the juice and the machine. In that case, try turning clockwise to reduce resistance.

This post is for those who want to take their skincare routine to the next level. Here we explain why it is wise to include Vitamin C in your skincare routine. What is Vitamin C? Vitamin C is an antioxidant naturally found in fruits and vegetables such as oranges, strawberries, broccoli, and kale. Generally, Vitamin C serums have the best effect on the skin. Serums reach the deeper layers of the skin and are applied after your toner and before your face cream, facial oil, SPF, and makeup. Use Vitamin C every day in your skincare routine for noticeable results and radiant, beautiful skin. Usage During the day, Vitamin C counteracts oxidative stress. In the evening, the skin barrier is strengthened, collagen production is stimulated, and damaged skin is repaired. For best results, we recommend that you: use Vitamin C both morning and evening. use sunscreen in the morning. This is because Vitamin C has a slight exfoliating effect and needs protection from breaking down by UV rays for the best effect. you should avoid combining Vitamin C with strong acids in your skincare routine. It can become too acidic (low pH) for the skin. It can also over-exfoliate the skin and lead to irritated and sensitive skin. you can start including Vitamin C in your skincare routine when you are in your late teens. Dosage Remember that a higher concentration of Vitamin C does not always mean better results. The effect starts to level off at 20% Vitamin C, so there is no reason to go far beyond 20%. Vitamin C comes in many different forms, varies in stability, and works best together with other antioxidants and substances. For example, Vitamin C becomes more stable when combined with Vitamin E and ferulic acid, making it more effective. Keep in mind that Vitamin C is very potent. If you have sensitive skin, you can start with a lower dose, for example 5%, and gradually increase as your skin gets used to it. This way, you avoid possible skin irritation. 5 benefits of Vitamin C in your skincare routine Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that is popular for use on the skin. It not only counteracts free radicals but also has other positive effects on the skin. 1. Prevents oxidative stress Free radicals are naturally formed in our bodies when oxygen is metabolized. They are substances that easily react with other substances and can sometimes damage our cells. When high levels of free radicals are produced or when there are more free radicals than antioxidants, the body is exposed to oxidative stress. When it comes to the skin, these factors can contribute to oxidative stress: UV rays from the sun and screens air pollution smoking nutrient-poor diet alcohol Oxidative stress can: make the skin age faster cause uneven skin tone and texture cause fine lines and deep wrinkles (in later years) contribute to a weaker skin barrier make the skin dry and dehydrated break down collagen so the skin becomes less elastic Make sure to always use Vitamin C in your morning skincare routine. This neutralizes free radicals so the skin is protected throughout the day. For daily protection against oxidative stress we recommend: 100% Pure Vitamin C Serum 2. Fights hyperpigmentation and discolorations A common misconception about Vitamin C in skincare is that it bleaches the skin to make it lighter. What it does do is even out and brighten the skin tone. Vitamin C inhibits the skin’s overproduction of melanin. This lightens existing hyperpigmentation and discolorations. Regular use of Vitamin C in your skincare routine can also prevent pigmentation and uneven skin tone from developing. This happens without affecting the skin’s normal pigmentation. For uneven skin tone and pigmentation we recommend: Brightening Serum 100% Pure Vitamin C Mask Multi-Vitamin Antioxidants Ultra Riché PM Treatment 3. Firms and rejuvenates skin Because Vitamin C is strongly acidic, it encourages the skin to repair itself by increasing collagen and elastin production. Thanks to its low pH, Vitamin C also has an exfoliating effect that removes dead skin cells. This smooths out fine lines, making the skin more firm and elastic. Always include Vitamin C in your skincare routine for younger, firmer, and plumper skin. For aging or mature skin with fine lines we recommend: Multi-Vitamin Antioxidants Potent PM Serum 4. Helps against acne Vitamin C with its anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce acne breakouts. Red, inflamed skin caused by inflammation can be soothed and calmed. Additionally, the formation of new acne scars can be reduced and existing scars can appear lighter. For acne-prone skin we recommend: 100% Pure Vitamin C Serum 100% Pure Vitamin C Mask 5. Hydrating + glow Vitamin C helps the skin retain moisture. More hydration and a more even skin tone give the skin a better glow. For dull and tired skin we recommend: Evolve Bio-Retinol C Booster Multi-Vitamin Antioxidants PM Facial Oil Multi-Vitamin Antioxidants Potent PM Serum 100% Pure Multi-Vitamin Antioxidants Ultra Riché PM Treatment You might also want to read about 100% Pure Multi-Vitamin Antioxidants Potent PM Serum

Having children (or not) is a big and important decision for most of us. And of course, we want to do everything we can to ensure that both we and our children feel as good as possible. But what is most important to consider? What should you eat, do, or focus on to increase the chances of a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby? In recent decades, involuntary infertility has increased in society. What is the cause? Can we influence this in any way? The simple answer to both these questions is: If we take care of and strengthen our bodies and minds (both men and women), we can increase the chances of a healthy pregnancy and healthy children. In this article, we provide some basic tips and ideas on how. What can cause infertility? Infertility is a complex issue and there is no one answer that applies to everyone. The issue concerns both men and women equally; both eggs and sperm need to be healthy and vigorous for successful fertilization. Then the baby needs a nourishing and healthy environment to grow and become strong – both men and women can contribute in different ways here as well. Here are four factors that can affect our ability to have children: Chemicals. Plastic residues, heavy metals, and chemical additives in food affect our health and also our reproductive systems. However, this can be addressed through a conscious lifestyle and detox. Nutritional imbalance. Some nutrients are essential for reproduction. If you have deficiencies or imbalances in your diet, it may be a good idea to review it before deciding to have children. Sedentary lifestyle or excessive exercise. Both a too sedentary life and excessively hard or frequent exercise are linked to reduced chances of becoming pregnant. Negative stress. Prolonged stress and worry related to career, finances, relationships, or other issues make it difficult for the body to create conditions for new life. What can you do to increase your fertility? How can we create the balance we need for the body and mind to feel ready for a child? Increasing your chances of a healthy pregnancy is a good idea whether you and your partner find it easy or difficult to conceive. In some ancient cultures, people prepare for 1-2 years before having children to give the child the best possible conditions, something many of today’s naturopaths and nutrition therapists also advocate. Here are some lifestyle considerations: Detox. A very good idea is to create as clean and favorable an environment as possible for new life. Couples can do one or more detox cures together and also consider how to optimize their lifestyle to have as few chemicals and other toxins as possible around them – in the kitchen, bathroom, and cleaning closet. There are many good resources on detox to explore. NOTE: Detox should be completed before you try to conceive. Nutrition. A fertility-friendly diet is rich in antioxidants, essential fats, chlorophyll, vitamins, and minerals. Nutrients especially important are zinc, selenium, folic acid, vitamin D, Q10, and omega-3. There are also herbs and superfoods traditionally used to prepare for a successful pregnancy (more on this below). Movement. Moderate physical activity is the best recipe for reproduction. Think of a healthy flow of blood and oxygen to all organs – but without feeling exhausted or needing several days of rest after exercise. Moving is also one of the best ways to boost the body’s own detox. Closeness & Relaxation. Perhaps most important of all; to signal to your body that this is a good time to create new life, you need both time for closeness and relaxation. Making love often and spending loving time together optimizes the hormone system and makes the body receptive to reproduction. What is directly harmful to fertility? There are certain habits and substances that are directly harmful to our fertility. Here are some of the most common recommendations to avoid in order to create conditions for a positive pregnancy test: Coffee. Caffeine is a strong stimulant that can have negative effects if you are sensitive to stress. It may be a good idea to avoid it if you want to conceive, even during pregnancy. Sugar. Refined sugar disrupts the hormone system and immune system, which drains energy from the reproductive system. Instead, eat naturally sweet carbohydrates from root vegetables, fruit, and berries. Trans fats. Cheap and refined fats disrupt, among other things, the hormone system. Focus instead on good fats from coconut, olives, avocado – as well as chia, flaxseed, or algae oil to get omega-3. Alcohol strains the liver and kidneys and also affects the hormone system. Besides, sex is better without alcohol! Which products do we recommend for those trying to have children? Vitamins: The vitamins especially important for fertility are vitamin C, folic acid, B-12, Q10, and vitamin D. Minerals: For both women and men, it is important to have good levels of zinc, selenium, and magnesium. Tips: For women, there are so-called prenatal multivitamins that also provide good nutrition for those wanting to conceive. For men, a natural multivitamin can provide a good foundation. Omega-3: A good fatty acid balance is important for the health of both sperm and eggs, as well as for the child’s development during pregnancy. The absolutely purest and safest source of good omega-3 is algae oil, which is rich in both DHA and EPA. Herbs: In ancient cultures and in natural medicine, herbs have always been used as part of preparing for pregnancy. The most popular herbs in this category are: For both men and women: Maca, Ashwagandha, Gynostemma, Ginseng & Shilajit. Especially for women: Goji berries & Schisandra (traditionally used in Chinese medicine). Natural body care: As important as what we put into our bodies is what we use on our skin, hair, and teeth. Consider doing a bathroom detox to minimize the number of chemicals in your environment. Natural body care is an excellent alternative.
