Schisandra berries, from the plant Schisandra chinensis, are known as "the quintessence of Chinese tonic herbs" and are an antioxidant and adaptogen with very high nutritional content. Schizandra has been used since the beginning of Chinese civilization and remains an elite herb in the Chinese herbal system.

The very name Schisandra in Chinese, Wu Wei Zi, tells a lot about the qualities this herb possesses. Wu Wei Zi means "Five Flavor Fruit" because Schizandra possesses all five of the classical flavors (sour, bitter, sweet, spicy, and salty) and thus embodies the core of all five elemental energies (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water).
